# Michael Flagstad

**Michael Flagstad** (4 February 1869 – 1 December 1930) was a [Norwegian](/source/Norwegians) musician and conductor from [Hamar](/source/Hamar).[1]

## Biography

Flagstad studied violin with [Gudbrand Bøhn](/source/Gudbrand_B%C3%B8hn), and he was the conductor at the [Central Theater](/source/Centralteatret)[2]: 32 from 1901 to 1909 and at the [Norwegian Theater](/source/Det_Norske_Teatret)[3] from 1912 to 1917. He was a founder and board member of the Norwegian Musicians' Union (*Norsk Musikerforbund*), which was established in 1911. He also translated numerous opera librettos into Norwegian.

Michael Flagstad was married to the pianist [Maja Flagstad](/source/Maja_Flagstad)[2]: 54 and was the father of the singer [Kirsten Flagstad](/source/Kirsten_Flagstad), conductor Ole Flagstad, pianist Lasse Flagstad, and singer [Karen-Marie Flagstad](/source/Karen-Marie_Flagstad).[2]: 76[4] They moved from Hamar to [Oslo](/source/Oslo), where they settled in [Vinderen](/source/Vinderen) around 1900.
