# Michael Cholbi

**Michael Cholbi** (born 1972) is an American philosopher and Chair in Philosophy at the [University of Edinburgh](/source/University_of_Edinburgh). He is best known for his research on [ethical issues](/source/Ethical_theory) related to [death](/source/Death) and dying, including [suicide](/source/Philosophy_of_suicide), [grief](/source/Grief), and [immortality](/source/Immortality). Cholbi has also published work in [moral psychology](/source/Moral_psychology) and [Kantian ethics](/source/Kantian_ethics), as well as on topics in [practical ethics](/source/Practical_ethics) such as [work and labor](/source/Industrial_relations), [punishment](/source/Punishment), and [paternalism](/source/Paternalism).[1][2][3][4][5]

## Life and career

Cholbi was born 1972 in [Portland, Oregon](/source/Portland,_Oregon). He intended to pursue a career in journalism before being exposed to Enlightenment thought in his first philosophy course.[6] He received his B.A. from [Swarthmore College](/source/Swarthmore_College) in 1994 and obtained his PhD from the [University of Virginia](/source/University_of_Virginia) in 1999, completing a dissertation entitled “Publicity and Practical Reason.” After spending three years as an assistant professor at [Brooklyn College, City University of New York](/source/Brooklyn_College,_City_University_of_New_York), he went on to become professor of philosophy and director of the California Center for Ethics and Policy (CCEP) at [California State Polytechnic University](/source/California_State_Polytechnic_University) in [Pomona, California](/source/Pomona,_California). In January 2020, he joined the University of Edinburgh.

Cholbi was previously the editor of the journal *[Teaching Philosophy](/source/Teaching_Philosophy)* and currently serves as an associate editor for *[Ethical Theory and Moral Practice](/source/Ethical_Theory_and_Moral_Practice)* and on the editorial boards of the *[Journal of Applied Philosophy](/source/Journal_of_Applied_Philosophy)* and *[Social Theory and Practice](/source/Social_Theory_and_Practice)*. In 2012, he founded the International Association for the Philosophy of Death and Dying (IAPDD).

Cholbi appeared as a contestant on *[Jeopardy!](/source/Jeopardy!)* in 2007, finishing second.[7]
