**Michael Chaim Nelson** is a former Councilman from the [New York City Council](/source/New_York_City_Council)'s [48th district](/source/New_York_City's_48th_City_Council_district), covering the [Midwood](/source/Midwood,_Brooklyn), [Sheepshead Bay](/source/Sheepshead_Bay,_Brooklyn), [Homecrest](/source/Homecrest,_Brooklyn), and [Brighton Beach](/source/Brighton_Beach,_Brooklyn) sections of [Brooklyn](/source/Brooklyn).

He won the seat in 1999 after [Anthony Weiner](/source/Anthony_Weiner) moved up to Congress to replace [Chuck Schumer](/source/Chuck_Schumer) in the [House of Representatives](/source/United_States_House_of_Representatives).[1] Due to term limits, he left office in December 2013 and was replaced by fellow Democrat [Chaim Deutsch](/source/Chaim_Deutsch) on January 1, 2014.
