# Michael Beddow

**Michael Beddow** (3 September 1947 – 2 September 2019) was a British scholar of [German literature](/source/German_literature), who was also a renowned expert in the application of [XML](/source/XML) technologies[1] to web representations of literary corpora, and who was deeply involved with the work of the [Text Encoding Initiative](/source/Text_Encoding_Initiative) (TEI).

## Academic career

Beddow studied at [St John's College, Cambridge](/source/St_John's_College,_Cambridge), earning a Double First in the Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos in 1969. After taking a [Postgraduate Certificate in Education](/source/Postgraduate_Certificate_in_Education) (PGCE) he became a [Research Fellow](/source/Research_Fellow) at [Trinity Hall, Cambridge](/source/Trinity_Hall,_Cambridge). His subsequent research for his [PhD](/source/Doctor_of_Philosophy) on *[Thomas Mann](/source/Thomas_Mann) and the Traditions of the [Picaresque Novel](/source/Picaresque_Novel) and the [Bildungsroman](/source/Bildungsroman)* included a year at the [University of Tübingen](/source/University_of_T%C3%BCbingen) as Foundation Scholar of the King Edward VII British-German Foundation.

Beddow held lecturing posts at Cambridge and [King's College London](/source/King's_College_London) before being appointed [Professor](/source/Professor) of German Language and Literature at the [University of Leeds](/source/University_of_Leeds) in 1986. He was an international authority on [Goethe](/source/Johann_Wolfgang_von_Goethe), Thomas Mann, [Christa Wolf](/source/Christa_Wolf) and the impact of modernity on German literature. He took early retirement from Leeds in 1998 to pursue a career in IT consultancy.[2][3][4]

## IT career

Until his death in September 2019, Beddow was for two decades the architect and maintainer of the [Digital Dictionary of Buddhism](/source/Digital_Dictionary_of_Buddhism), the primary online scholarly reference resource for Buddhist Studies.[5] and the Internet version of the [Anglo-Norman Dictionary](/source/Anglo-Norman_Dictionary).[6]
