The [neoclassical](/source/Neoclassical_architecture) building that houses the museum was designed by French architect [Claude Sahut](/source/Claude_Sahut) and built in 1924, formerly housing the country's [Ministry of Development and Public Works](/source/Ministry_of_Transport_and_Communications_(Peru)).[1] It was inaugurated on October 10, 2010.[2][3]

The museum links the history of the city with the history of Peru using audiovisual resources such as scenery, videos and holograms, which covers the [pre-Hispanic](/source/Pre-Columbian_Peru), [viceregal](/source/Viceroyalty_of_Peru) and [republican eras](/source/Republican_history_of_Peru) told by the characters who shaped it, such as [Viceroy Amat](/source/Manuel_de_Amat_y_Junyent), [Rose of Lima](/source/Rose_of_Lima), [Pancho Fierro](/source/Pancho_Fierro), [José Olaya](/source/Jos%C3%A9_Olaya), [José de San Martín](/source/Jos%C3%A9_de_San_Mart%C3%ADn), [Simón Bolívar](/source/Sim%C3%B3n_Bol%C3%ADvar), [Ricardo Palma](/source/Ricardo_Palma), [Abraham Valdelomar](/source/Abraham_Valdelomar), [Miguel Grau](/source/Miguel_Grau), among others.

It has 27 projection rooms,[4] whose museographic direction was directed by filmmaker [Luis Llosa](/source/Luis_Llosa).[5] It also contains a temporary exhibition hall, the Municipal Library, the Historical Archive and the [Taulichusco](/source/Taulichusco) auditorium.
