# Metrogas F.C.

**Metrogas Football Club** is a [football](/source/Association_football) club based in [Thamesmead](/source/Thamesmead), [England](/source/England).

## History

Metrogas was founded in 1888, two years after the completion of the [East Greenwich Gas Works](/source/East_Greenwich_Gas_Works), as a [works team](/source/Works_team) for the South Metropolitan Gas Company. **Metrogas Athletic** joined the [Kent League](/source/Kent_Football_League_(1894%E2%80%931959)) in 1909, staying in the league for four years. In 1913, Metrogas joined the [Athenian League](/source/Athenian_League), finishing runners up in 1920 and 1922. In the [1921–22 season](/source/1921%E2%80%9322_FA_Cup), Metrogas entered the [FA Cup](/source/FA_Cup) for the first time, losing 2–1 at home to [Norwich City](/source/Norwich_City_F.C.) in the fifth qualifying round.[1][2] In 1923, Metrogas joined the [London League](/source/London_League_(football)), finishing 11th in the Premier Division.[3]

In 1987, Metrogas joined the [Spartan League](/source/Spartan_League), joining the Intermediate Division. Metrogas remained in the Spartan League until the [1993–94 season](/source/1993%E2%80%9394_in_English_football). In 2005, Metrogas joined the [Kent County League](/source/Kent_County_League). In 2014, Metrogas won the league, retaining the title the following season.[2]

## Ground

Upon their foundation, Metrogas played at the Metrogas Sports and Social Club in Horn Lane, [Greenwich](/source/Greenwich) and Metrogas later moved to Devonshire Grove, off the [Old Kent Road](/source/Old_Kent_Road).[1] Metrogas' first team used to play at the Metrogas Sports Ground in [New Eltham](/source/New_Eltham),[4] before the club confirmed a groundsharing agreement to play at [Sporting Club Thamesmead](/source/Sporting_Club_Thamesmead_F.C.)'s Bayliss Avenue ground in May 2021.[5]
