{{Update|date=January 2018}}{{Short description|Open-source web service}}
'''Web Services Interoperability Technology''' ('''WSIT''') is an [open-source](/source/open-source) project started by [Sun Microsystems](/source/Sun_microsystems) to develop the next-generation of [Web service](/source/Web_service) technologies. It provides interoperability between [Java Web Services](/source/Web_Services_Metadata_for_Java) and [Microsoft's](/source/Microsoft) [Windows Communication Foundation](/source/Windows_Communication_Foundation) (WCF).<ref>{{cite web

It consists of [Java programming language](/source/Java_(programming_language)) [APIs](/source/application_programming_interface) that enable advanced WS-* features to be used in a way that is compatible with Microsoft's Windows Communication Foundation as used by [.NET](/source/Microsoft_.NET). The interoperability between different products is accomplished by implementing a number of Web Services specifications, like [JAX-WS](/source/JAX-WS) that provides interoperability between Java Web Services and [Microsoft Windows Communication Foundation](/source/Windows_Communication_Foundation).<ref>{{cite web

|quote=Interoperability is accomplished by implementing a number of WS-*specifications and holding plugfests where Sun and Microsoft engineers work together testing our respective implementations of those specifications. As an extension to JAX-WS, WSIT provides additional interoperability between Java Web Services and Microsoft's Windows Communication Foundation. It focuses on enterprise class features such as security, reliable messaging, and atomic transactions.

WSIT is currently under development as part of [Eclipse Metro](/source/Eclipse_Metro).

WSIT is a series of extensions to the basic SOAP protocol, and so uses [JAX-WS](/source/Jakarta_XML_Web_Services) and [JAXB](/source/Jakarta_XML_Binding). It is not a new protocol such as the binary DCOM.{{Citation needed|date=March 2026}}

WSIT implements the [WS-I](/source/WS-I) specifications, including:
