The **Mesa River** ([Spanish](/source/Spanish_language): *Río Mesa*) is a river in the [Sierra de Solorio](/source/Sierra_de_Solorio) range area, [Iberian System](/source/Iberian_System), [Spain](/source/Spain). It is a tributary of the [Piedra River](/source/Piedra_River%2C_Spain).

There are [trout](/source/Trout) in the river, but the population of the [endangered](/source/Endangered) [European freshwater crayfish](/source/Austropotamobius_pallipes) in the river has practically disappeared owing to the introduction of the [North American](/source/North_America) [signal crayfish](/source/Signal_crayfish) (*Pacifastacus leniusculus*).[1]

## Geography

It rises near [Selas](/source/Selas), in the [province of Guadalajara](/source/Guadalajara_(province)), [Castile-La Mancha](/source/Castile-La_Mancha). The Mesa has an irregular flow, due to the long dry season of the summer months, with often heavy rainfall in the spring and autumn. It receives much water at [Jaraba](/source/Jaraba), where there are [thermal springs](/source/Thermal_springs).[2]

The Mesa River cuts a deep [canyon](/source/Canyon), locally known as *Hoces del Río Mesa* (Mesa River Gorges) or *Valle del Mesa* (Mesa Valley).[3]
