==Early life and war service==
Born in [Broadford, Victoria](/source/Broadford%2C_Victoria) in August 1920, he was educated at [Kingswood College](/source/Kingswood_College_(Box_Hill)) in [Melbourne](/source/Melbourne) before becoming a Commonwealth public servant. After serving in the [Royal Australian Navy](/source/Royal_Australian_Navy) in [World War II](/source/World_War_II) 1941–46, he became a drapery and hardware merchant. ==Political career==
In 1966, he was elected to the [Australian House of Representatives](/source/Australian_House_of_Representatives) as the [Liberal](/source/Liberal_Party_of_Australia) member for [Lalor](/source/Division_of_Lalor), defeating long-serving [Labor](/source/Australian_Labor_Party) member [Reg Pollard](/source/Reg_Pollard_(politician)).
