# Mercer Ice Stream

**Mercer Ice Stream** ([84°50′S 145°00′W](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?params=84_50_S_145_00_W)), formerly **Ice Stream A**, flows west to [Gould Coast](/source/Gould_Coast) to the south of [Whillans Ice Stream](/source/Whillans_Ice_Stream), Antarctica. It is the southernmost of several major [ice streams](/source/Ice_stream) draining from [Marie Byrd Land](/source/Marie_Byrd_Land) into the [Ross Ice Shelf](/source/Ross_Ice_Shelf). The ice streams were investigated and mapped by [U.S. Antarctic Research Program](/source/U.S._Antarctic_Research_Program) personnel in a number of field seasons from 1983–84 and named Ice Stream A, B, C, etc., according to their position from south to north. The name was changed by the [Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names](/source/Advisory_Committee_on_Antarctic_Names) in 2002 to honor Quaternary geologist [John H. Mercer](/source/John_H._Mercer) (1922–87) of the Institute of Polar Studies (now the [Byrd Polar Research Center](/source/Byrd_Polar_Research_Center)), [Ohio State University](/source/Ohio_State_University), who mapped the [moraines](/source/Moraine) above [Reedy Glacier](/source/Reedy_Glacier) and in the [Ohio Range](/source/Ohio_Range) at the head of [Horlick Ice Stream](/source/Horlick_Ice_Stream), the major tributaries to Mercer Ice Stream.[1]
