Menahem Golan מנחם גולן Born Menachem Globus[1] (1929-05-31)31 May 1929 Tiberias, Mandatory Palestine Died 8 August 2014(2014-08-08) (aged 85) Jaffa, Israel Other name Joseph Goldman Occupations Film director film producer screenwriter Known for Founder of Golan-Globus/The Cannon Group Spouse Rachel Golan Children 3

**Menahem Golan** ([Hebrew](/source/Hebrew_language): מנחם גולן‎; 31 May 1929 – 8 August 2014, originally **Menachem Globus**) was an [Israeli](/source/Israelis) [film producer](/source/Film_producer), [screenwriter](/source/Screenwriter), and [director](/source/Film_director). He co-owned [The Cannon Group](/source/The_Cannon_Group) with his cousin [Yoram Globus](/source/Yoram_Globus). Cannon specialized in producing low-to-mid-budget American films, primarily [genre](/source/Film_genre) films, during the 1980s after Golan and Globus had achieved significant filmmaking success in [Israel](/source/Israel) during the 1970s.[2]

Golan produced films featuring actors such as [Sean Connery](/source/Sean_Connery), [Sylvester Stallone](/source/Sylvester_Stallone), [Chuck Norris](/source/Chuck_Norris), [Jean-Claude Van Damme](/source/Jean-Claude_Van_Damme), and [Charles Bronson](/source/Charles_Bronson), and for a period, was known as a producer of comic book-style films like *[Masters of the Universe](/source/Masters_of_the_Universe_(1987_film))*, *[Superman IV: The Quest for Peace](/source/Superman_IV%3A_The_Quest_for_Peace)*, *[Captain America](/source/Captain_America_(1990_film))*, and his aborted attempt to bring [Spider-Man](/source/Spider-Man) to the silver screen. Golan also wrote and [polished](/source/Screenwriting#polish) numerous film scripts under the pen name **Joseph Goldman**.[3] At the time of his death, Golan had produced over 200 films, directed 44, and won 8 "[Kinor David](/source/Kinor_David)" awards as well as "[Israel Prize](/source/Israel_Prize)" in Cinema. He was nominated for a [BAFTA Award for Best Foreign-Language Film](/source/BAFTA_Award_for_Best_Film_Not_in_the_English_Language) for [Franco Zeffirelli](/source/Franco_Zeffirelli)'s *[Otello](/source/Otello_(1986_film))*.

## Early life

Born Menachem Globus[1] in [Tiberias](/source/Tiberias) in then [British Mandate of Palestine](/source/Mandatory_Palestine), his parents were [Jewish](/source/Jewish) emigrants from the [Russian Empire](/source/Russian_Empire). He spent his early years in Tiberias, then studied directing at the [Old Vic School](/source/Bristol_Old_Vic_Theatre_School) and the [London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art](/source/London_Academy_of_Music_and_Dramatic_Art), and filmmaking at [New York University](/source/New_York_University). During the [Israeli War of Independence](/source/1948_Palestine_war), Golan served as a pilot in the [Israeli Air Force](/source/Israeli_Air_Force).

## Film career

Menahem Golan awarded Kinor David 1964

Golan started as an apprentice at [Habima Theater](/source/Habima_Theater) in Tel Aviv. After completing his studies in theater direction, he staged plays in Israel. He gained experience as a filmmaker by working as an assistant to [Roger Corman](/source/Roger_Corman).[4]

Golan is probably best known as a director for his film *[Operation Thunderbolt](/source/Operation_Thunderbolt_(film))* (*Mivtsa Yonatan*, 1977), about the [Israeli raid on Entebbe airport](/source/Operation_Entebbe) in Uganda. He also produced *[Eskimo Limon](/source/Eskimo_Limon)* (*Lemon Popsicle*, 1978), a film that spawned many sequels and an American remake, *[The Last American Virgin](/source/The_Last_American_Virgin)* (1982).

An adaptation of the [Isaac Bashevis Singer](/source/Isaac_Bashevis_Singer) novel *[The Magician of Lublin](/source/The_Magician_of_Lublin_(film))* (1979) was followed by the musical *[The Apple](/source/The_Apple_(1980_film))* (1980). An unusual moral fable with a rock-disco soundtrack, *The Apple* routinely appears on lists of all-time-worst movies, earning it [cult film](/source/Cult_film) status.[5]

Golan's production company [The Cannon Group](/source/The_Cannon_Group) produced a long line of films during the 1980s and early 1990s, including *[Delta Force](/source/The_Delta_Force_(film))*, *[Runaway Train](/source/Runaway_Train_(film))*, and some of the *[Death Wish](/source/Death_Wish_(1974_film))* sequels. In 1986, Cannon was taken over by [Pathe Communications](/source/Pathe_Communications). Golan produced several [comic book](/source/Comic_book)-style movies in the last half of the 1980s, most notably *[Masters of the Universe](/source/Masters_of_the_Universe_(1987_film))*, based on the [Mattel toy line of the same name](/source/Masters_of_the_Universe) and inspired by the comics of [Jack Kirby](/source/Jack_Kirby).[6] In 1987, Cannon gained infamy after its UK-based production of *[Superman IV: The Quest for Peace](/source/Superman_IV%3A_The_Quest_for_Peace)* performed poorly at the box office, received mixed to negative reviews from critics and provoked a negative backlash from fans. Golan resigned from Cannon in 1989, and by 1993 the company had folded. After Cannon's collapse, Golan became head of [21st Century Film Corporation](/source/21st_Century_Film_Corporation) and produced several low to medium-budget films.

Golan planned to shoot *[Spider-Man](/source/Spider-Man): The Movie* in 1986 at both [Elstree Studios](/source/Elstree_Studios) in Hertfordshire in the United Kingdom and on location in [Tel Aviv](/source/Tel_Aviv), Israel. [Dolph Lundgren](/source/Dolph_Lundgren), who played He-Man in *Masters of the Universe* was envisioned for the role of the [Green Goblin](/source/Green_Goblin), and Spider-Man co-creator [Stan Lee](/source/Stan_Lee) was approached to make a cameo appearance in the film as [J. Jonah Jameson](/source/J._Jonah_Jameson).[7] Golan struggled for years to produce the film and finally failed when 21st Century Film Corporation filed for bankruptcy and closed its doors in 1996 (along with [Carolco Pictures](/source/Carolco_Pictures), another company that had agreed to help finance the film). [Sony Pictures](/source/Sony_Pictures) eventually purchased the rights to the [Marvel Comics](/source/Marvel_Comics) character and released [a Spider-Man film](/source/Spider-Man_(2002_film)) in 2002, directed by [Sam Raimi](/source/Sam_Raimi). That year, Golan released [his adaptation](/source/Crime_and_Punishment_(2002_Russian_film)) of *[Crime and Punishment](/source/Crime_and_Punishment)*.

## Personal life

Golan was married to Rachel (1930–2015), a [makeup artist](/source/Makeup_artist). Together, they had three daughters, clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst Ruth Golan (born 1953), Naomi (1958–2015) and Yael (born 1964).[4] His cousin was Israeli-American producer [Yoram Globus](/source/Yoram_Globus).[8]

## Death

Whilst visiting [Jaffa](/source/Jaffa), [Tel Aviv](/source/Tel_Aviv), with family members on the morning of 8 August 2014, Golan collapsed.[9] He lost consciousness, and attempts to resuscitate him failed.[9] He was 85 years old.[10]
