# Melyane Island

**Melyane Island** (Bulgarian: остров Меляне, ˈɔstrof ˈmɛʎɐnɛ) is the southernmost of [Dunbar Islands](/source/Dunbar_Islands) off [Varna Peninsula](/source/Varna_Peninsula), [Livingston Island](/source/Livingston_Island) in the [South Shetland Islands](/source/South_Shetland_Islands). The feature is ice-free, extending 280 m in southeast–northwest direction and 90 m wide. The area was visited by early 19th century [sealers](/source/Seal_hunting).

The island is named after the settlement of [Melyane](/source/Melyane) in Northwestern Bulgaria.

Melyane Island is located at [62°28′44.2″S 60°11′23″W](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?params=62_28_44.2_S_60_11_23_W), which is 250 m south of [Balsha Island](/source/Balsha_Island), 1.27 km west of [Slab Point](/source/Slab_Point) and 2.52 km north-northeast of [Kotis Point](/source/Kotis_Point), [Livingston Island](/source/Livingston_Island). British mapping in 1968 and Bulgarian mapping in 2009.
