# Melbu

**Melbu**[1] is a [village](/source/Village) in [Hadsel Municipality](/source/Hadsel_Municipality) in [Nordland](/source/Nordland) county, [Norway](/source/Norway). The village is located on the island of [Hadseløya](/source/Hadsel%C3%B8ya) on the northern shore of the [Hadselfjorden](/source/Hadselfjorden). Melbu is one of the two main population centres on the island of [Hadseløya](/source/Hadsel%C3%B8ya), and it is called "The Pearl of [Vesteraalen](/source/Vesteraalen)". The other population centre is the town of [Stokmarknes](/source/Stokmarknes) in the north. Melbu is host to the annual [Sommer-Melbu](/source/Sommer-Melbu) festival. Its economy heavily relies on the [fishing industry](/source/Fishing_industry).

The 1.68-square kilometre (420-acre) village has a population (2023) of 2,257 and a [population density](/source/Population_density) of 1,343 inhabitants per square kilometre (3,480 /sq mi).[2]

[Melbu Church](/source/Melbu_Church) is located in this village. Melbu is also a school centre in Vesterålen, and has a ferry connection to the village of [Fiskebøl](/source/Fiskeb%C3%B8l) on the island of [Austvågøya](/source/Austv%C3%A5g%C3%B8ya) to the south via the [Melbu-Fiskebøl Ferry](/source/Melbu-Fiskeb%C3%B8l_Ferry). The nearest airport, [Stokmarknes Airport, Skagen](/source/Stokmarknes_Airport,_Skagen), is about 25 kilometres (16 mi) to the north.[3]

## Economy

Melbu has one of the biggest [fish processing](/source/Fish_processing) facilities of Norway Seafoods/[Aker Seafoods](/source/Aker_Seafoods) in [Northern Norway](/source/Northern_Norway). Several main [factory trawler](/source/Factory_trawler) licenses are permanently related to the factory facilities in Melbu. There are also other industry facilities connected to fish processing, aquaculture, and other marine industry in Melbu. The [Norwegian Fishing Industry Museum](/source/Norwegian_Fishing_Industry_Museum) is located in the town's former [Neptune Herring Oil Factory](/source/Neptune_Herring_Oil_Factory).[4]
