He played club rugby several teams including Nantymoel, Ogmore Vale, [Bridgend](/source/Bridgend_RFC), [St. Batholomew's Hospital](/source/Barts_and_the_London_RFC), [London Welsh](/source/London_Welsh_RFC) and [Cardiff](/source/Cardiff_RFC). At international level he represented [Wales](/source/Wales_national_rugby_union_team) on six occasions.

==Rugby career==
"Melbourne" Thomas was a Doctor of Medicine, having studied first at [University College, Cardiff](/source/University_College%2C_Cardiff) and then at [St Bartholomew's Hospital](/source/St_Bartholomew's_Hospital), he also played rugby for both institutions. During the First World War he enlisted in the Royal Navy, serving as a surgeon sub-lieutenant. After the war came to a close, in an effort to rebuild the sport of rugby, a match was organised between a Wales team and the [New Zealand Army](/source/New_Zealand_national_rugby_union_team). The game was arranged for 21 April 1919, to be played at [St. Helen's](/source/St._Helen's_Rugby_and_Cricket_Ground) in Swansea. Thomas was chosen to represent Wales, earning his first international cap.
