**Melaenae** or **Melainai** (Ancient Greek: Μέλαιναι) was a fortified [deme](/source/Deme) of [ancient Attica](/source/Ancient_Attica), on the frontier of [Boeotia](/source/Ancient_Boeotia), celebrated in Attic mythology as the place for which [Melanthus](/source/Melanthus) and [Xanthus](/source/Xanthos_(King_of_Thebes)) fought. It was sometimes called **Celaenae** or **Kelainai** (Κέλαιναι).[1]
