# Mel Ming

**H. Melvin "Mel" Ming** (born as **Hilton Austin Melvin Ming**) is a Bermudian-American broadcast executive who was the president and CEO of [Sesame Workshop](/source/Sesame_Workshop) from 2011 until his retirement in 2014.[1] He was previously chief operating officer of [Sesame Workshop](/source/Sesame_Workshop), and has held executive positions at the [Museum of Television and Radio](/source/Paley_Center_for_Media), [WQED](/source/WQED_Multimedia) and [NPR](/source/NPR).

## Early life

Ming was born in [Bermuda](/source/Bermuda) and attended [Temple University](/source/Temple_University) (class of 1967) graduating with a [B.B.A.](/source/Bachelor_of_Business_Administration) in [Accountancy](/source/Accountancy). He later served in the [U. S. Army](/source/U._S._Army) during the [Vietnam War](/source/Vietnam_War).[2][citation needed]

## Career

Ming is a [certified public accountant](/source/Certified_public_accountant).[2] He became the finance director of [NPR](/source/NPR) in August 1983.[3] In 1997, he became the vice president and [treasurer](/source/Treasurer) at the Museum of Television and Radio (now [Paley Center for Media](/source/Paley_Center_for_Media)) in New York, after having served as chief operating officer at [WQED](/source/WQED_Multimedia) in [Pittsburgh](/source/Pittsburgh).[4] He joined [Sesame Workshop](/source/Sesame_Workshop) in 1999 as its chief financial officer, and became chief operating officer in 2002. He was named president and CEO in October 2011, replacing [Gary Knell](/source/Gary_Knell).[1] He retired in 2014 and was succeeded by [Jeffrey D. Dunn](/source/Jeffrey_D._Dunn).[5]
