The '''Meisel family''' (also '''Meisels''' and '''Meizels''') is a distinguished [Bohemia](/source/Bohemia)n rabbinic family originally from [Prague](/source/Prague), who descend from Yitskhak Eizik Meisels (b. 1425), a paternal 10th generation descendant of the [Exilarch](/source/Exilarch), [Mar Ukba](/source/Mar_Ukba).<ref name=":0">{{Cite web|last=|first=|date=|title=Meizels family tree|url=https://www.davidicdynasty.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/meizels.pdf|archive-url=|archive-date=|access-date=|website=Davidicdynasty.org}}</ref> From the early 16th century and onward, members of the family such as [Mordecai Meisel](/source/Mordecai_Meisel) achieved great economic prominence in [Prague](/source/Prague), becoming one of the wealthiest [Bohemian Jewish](/source/History_of_the_Jews_in_the_Czech_Republic) families. It was also during this time that a branch of the family descending from Simcha Bunim Meisels (1545-1624) (the son-in-law of [Moses Isserles](/source/Moses_Isserles)) immigrated to [Kraków](/source/Krak%C3%B3w), [Poland](/source/Poland) due to rising Antisemitism in Bohemia. In Poland the family produced several rabbinic scholars, such as [Dow Ber Meisels](/source/Dow_Ber_Meisels) and [Moses Bonems-Meisels](/source/Moses_ben_Isaac_Bonems).<ref>{{Cite web|title=Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Mirkes|url=https://darkwing.uoregon.edu/~rkimble/Mirweb/RabbiMirkes.html#1|access-date=2020-08-25|website=darkwing.uoregon.edu}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web|title=MEISEL - JewishEncyclopedia.com|url=http://www.jewishencyclopedia.com/articles/10589-meisel|access-date=2020-08-26|website=www.jewishencyclopedia.com}}</ref> Among the families descendants are: [Shabbatai HaKohen](/source/Shabbatai_HaKohen), [Yitzchak Yaacov Reines](/source/Yitzchak_Yaacov_Reines), [Alexander Sender Shor](/source/Simla_Hadasha), [John von Neumann](/source/John_von_Neumann),<ref>{{cite book |last=Macrae |first=Norman |author-link=Norman Macrae |title=John von Neumann: The Scientific Genius Who Pioneered the Modern Computer, Game Theory, Nuclear Deterrence, and Much More|year=1992|publisher=Pantheon Press |isbn=978-0-679-41308-0|page=39}}</ref> as well as the [Peshischa](/source/Peshischa_(Hasidic_group)), [Sulitza](/source/Sulitza_(Hasidic_dynasty)), [Ropshitz](/source/Ropshitz_(Hasidic_dynasty)), [Bobov](/source/Bobov_(Hasidic_dynasty)), [Biala](/source/Biala_(Hasidic_dynasty)), [Kretshnif](/source/Kretshnif_(Hasidic_dynasty)), and [Kotzk](/source/Kotzk) [Hasidic dynasties](/source/List_of_Hasidic_dynasties).<ref name=":0" />
