The '''Meio-Norte''' ({{IPA|pt|ˈmeju ˈnɔʁtʃi}}, ''mid-north'') is one of the four sub-regions of [Northeast](/source/Northeast_Region%2C_Brazil) [Brazil](/source/Brazil), encompassing the territory of [Maranhão](/source/Maranh%C3%A3o) and the western half of [Piauí](/source/Piau%C3%AD).<ref name="m248">{{cite web | title=Encyclopaedia of Brazilian Municipalities | url=https://biblioteca.ibge.gov.br/visualizacao/livros/liv27295_3.pdf | access-date=2025-02-23}}</ref><ref name="f695">{{cite book | last=Sommers | first=Michael | title=Moon Living Abroad in Brazil | publisher=Moon Travel | date=2014-04-29 | isbn=978-1-61238-362-0 | page=}}</ref> The sub-region contains two of the nine capitals of the [Northeast](/source/Northeast_Region%2C_Brazil) [Brazil](/source/Brazil) region, [Teresina](/source/Teresina) and [São Luís](/source/S%C3%A3o_Lu%C3%ADs%2C_Maranh%C3%A3o). The Region is a climatic transition area located between the equatorial Amazon and semi-arid hinterlands.

Due to the region's great variation in the amount of rainfall, agriculture is limited to the cultivation of rice in [Maranhão](/source/Maranh%C3%A3o) and the raising of cattle in [Piauí](/source/Piau%C3%AD), in areas of cerrado. Due to its climate, vegetation is typically composed of palm trees like [babassu](/source/Attalea_speciosa) and [carnauba](/source/Copernicia_prunifera) ([Forest of Cocais](/source/Maranh%C3%A3o_Baba%C3%A7u_forests)).

Due to the local diversity of plant species and the threat of deforestation caused by livestock grazing and plantation expansion, there is an action plan for the preservation of plant species in the region.<ref name="i433">{{cite web | title=Figure 1.
