**Mehola** ([Hebrew](/source/Hebrew_language): מחולה) is a religious [moshav](/source/Moshav) and [Israeli settlement](/source/Israeli_settlement) in the [West Bank](/source/West_Bank). Located in the [Jordan Valley](/source/Jordan_Valley_(Middle_East)) near the [Green Line](/source/Green_Line_(Israel)) and the Palestinian village of [Bardala](/source/Bardala),[2] it falls under the jurisdiction of [Bik'at HaYarden Regional Council](/source/Bik'at_HaYarden_Regional_Council).[3] With an area of 5,000 [dunams](/source/Dunam), in 2024 it had a population of 789.

The international community considers Israeli settlements in the West Bank [illegal under international law](/source/International_law_and_Israeli_settlements), but the Israeli government disputes this.[4]

## History

The village was established in 1967 by [Bnei Akiva](/source/Bnei_Akiva) members. It was named after the [biblical](/source/Bible) city of [Abel-meholah](/source/Abel-meholah) ([Judges 7:22](https://bible.oremus.org/?passage=Judges%207:22&version=nrsv), [1 Kings 4:12](https://bible.oremus.org/?passage=1%20Kings%204:12&version=nrsv), [1 Kings 19:16](https://bible.oremus.org/?passage=1%20Kings%2019:16&version=nrsv)), which was located in the area.[5]

The inhabitants of Mehola cultivate some of the village lands of the depopulated [Palestinian](/source/Palestinians) village of [Al-Fatur](/source/Al-Fatur).[6]

In 1993, it was the site of [Mehola Junction bombing](/source/Mehola_Junction_bombing).

In June 2012, the [outpost](/source/Israeli_outpost) Givat Sal'it ([Hebrew](/source/Hebrew_language): גבעת סלעית) in the northern [Jordan Valley](/source/Jordan_Valley_(Middle_East)) was retroactively legalised by redesignating it as a neighbourhood of Mehola, from which it is separated by a major inter-city highway.[7]
