**Meathop and Ulpha** is a former [civil parish](/source/Civil_parishes_in_England), now in the parish of [Witherslack, Meathop and Ulpha](/source/Witherslack%2C_Meathop_and_Ulpha), in the [Westmorland and Furness](/source/Westmorland_and_Furness) district of the English county of [Cumbria](/source/Cumbria). [Historically](/source/Historic_counties_of_England) in [Westmorland](/source/Westmorland), it is located 3.6 miles (5.8 km) north east of [Grange-over-Sands](/source/Grange-over-Sands), 10.6 miles (17.1 km) south west of [Kendal](/source/Kendal) and 64.0 miles (103.0 km) south of [Carlisle](/source/Carlisle%2C_Cumbria), between the confluence of the [River Kent](/source/River_Kent) estuary and the [River Winster](/source/River_Winster). In 2001 it had a population of 143,[2] increasing slightly to 154 at the Census 2011.[1] It included the village of [Meathop](/source/Meathop).

There were two [Sites of Special Scientific Interest](/source/Site_of_Special_Scientific_Interest) in the parish:

- [Meathop Moss](/source/Meathop_Moss) is a [raised peat-bog](/source/Raised_bog) designated an SSSI for its biological interest.[3] Leased by the [Society for the Promotion of Nature Reserves](/source/Society_For_The_Promotion_Of_Nature_Reserves) in 1919, it now belongs to the [Cumbria Wildlife Trust](/source/Cumbria_Wildlife_Trust).

- Meathop Woods and Quarry, which consists of [woodland](/source/Woodland) and a disused [quarry](/source/Quarry) on the side of a hill, has biological and geological interest.[4]

## History

Meathop and Ulpha was formerly a [township](/source/Township_(England)) in [Beetham](/source/Beetham) parish,[5] from 1866 Meathop and Ulpha was a civil parish in its own right[6] until it was abolished on 1 April 2015 and merged with [Witherslack](/source/Witherslack) to form "Witherslack, Meathop and Ulpha".[7]
