The **McDonald Ice Rumples** ([75°28′S 26°18′W / 75.467°S 26.300°W / -75.467; -26.300](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?pagename=McDonald_Ice_Rumples&params=75_28_S_26_18_W_)) constitute an [ice rise](/source/Ice_rise) in the [Brunt Ice Shelf](/source/Brunt_Ice_Shelf) bordering the [Weddell Sea](/source/Weddell_Sea) in [Antarctica](/source/Antarctica), covering an area of 3 by 2 nautical miles (6 by 4 km).

[Ernest Shackleton](/source/Ernest_Shackleton)'s [Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition](/source/Imperial_Trans-Antarctic_Expedition) reported a [glacier](/source/Glacier) in this vicinity in January 1915. It was named "Allan McDonald Glacier" after [Allan McDonald](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Allan_McDonald_(shipowner)&action=edit&redlink=1) of the [British Association](/source/British_Association) of [Magallanes](/source/Magallanes_y_la_Ant%C3%A1rtica_Chilena_Region) at [Punta Arenas](/source/Punta_Arenas), who was chiefly responsible for raising funds for sending the schooner *Emma* on the third attempt, in July 1916, to rescue the 22 men of the *[Endurance](/source/Endurance_(1912_ship))* left on [Elephant Island](/source/Elephant_Island).

The [Royal Society](/source/Royal_Society) [International Geophysical Year](/source/International_Geophysical_Year) expeditions occupied [Halley Research Station](/source/Halley_Research_Station) nearby (1955–59) and were familiar with this feature, reporting in 1957 that the maximum elevation above the general surface of the [ice shelf](/source/Ice_shelf), a few hundred metres from the ice front, was about 18 metres (60 ft). It has now been identified with "Allan McDonald Glacier" and, for the sake of historical continuity, the [UK Antarctic Place-names Committee](/source/UK_Antarctic_Place-names_Committee) has given the name McDonald to these ice rumples.[1]
