It was discovered by U.S. ground and flying personnel at [Ellsworth Station](/source/Ellsworth_Station) (1957–58) under Captain [Finn Ronne](/source/Finn_Ronne) of the [U.S. Navy Reserve](/source/U.S._Navy_Reserve) (USNR), and was named by the [Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names](/source/Advisory_Committee_on_Antarctic_Names) for Lieutenant Commander [Charles J. McCarthy](/source/Charles_J._McCarthy_(U.S._Navy)), USNR, commander of the U.S. Navy Squadron [VX-6](/source/VX-6) aircraft unit at Ellsworth Station during this period.<ref name=gnis/>
