Sonntag was first elected to the [Saskatchewan legislature](/source/Legislative_Assembly_of_Saskatchewan) as the member for [Meadow Lake](/source/Meadow_Lake_(provincial_electoral_district)) in [1991](/source/1991_Saskatchewan_general_election) and was re-elected in [1995](/source/1995_Saskatchewan_general_election), [1999](/source/1999_Saskatchewan_general_election) and [2003](/source/2003_Saskatchewan_general_election). Sonntag was first appointed to [cabinet](/source/Executive_Council_of_Saskatchewan) in June 1997 and held various portfolios between then and 2007, including: Property Management and [Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority](/source/Saskatchewan_Liquor_and_Gaming_Authority), Post-Secondary Education and Skills Training, Highways and Transportation, Energy and Mines, First Nations and Métis Relations, Industry and Resources, and Crown Investments Corporation. Sonntag was a candidate in the [2001 Saskatchewan New Democratic Party leadership election](/source/2001_Saskatchewan_New_Democratic_Party_leadership_election), which occurred after [Roy Romanow](/source/Roy_Romanow) announced his intention to step down as Premier and leader of the Saskatchewan NDP. Sonntag placed fourth in a crowded field of seven candidates; and [Lorne Calvert](/source/Lorne_Calvert) was subsequently elected as leader.[3] Sonntag was initially declared elected in the [2007 election](/source/2007_Saskatchewan_general_election), narrowly beating former federal Member of Parliament [Jeremy Harrison](/source/Jeremy_Harrison) in Meadow Lake, but was subsequently declared defeated after a count error was noted the following day. The count of absentee ballots on November 19 confirmed Harrison's victory - by only 36 votes.
