**Maybe Monday** is an American [experimental](/source/Experimental_music) [electroacoustic improvisation](/source/Electroacoustic_improvisation) music ensemble comprising [guitarist](/source/Guitar) [Fred Frith](/source/Fred_Frith), [koto](/source/Koto_(musical_instrument)) player [Miya Masaoka](/source/Miya_Masaoka) and [saxophonist](/source/Saxophone) [Larry Ochs](/source/Larry_Ochs_(musician)).[1] The trio was formed in [San Francisco](/source/San_Francisco,_California) in March 1997 when they performed in a concert at the [Great American Music Hall](/source/Great_American_Music_Hall).[2] They have since toured the United States, Canada and Europe, and released three albums between 1999 and 2008.[3]

Their music has been described as a "delicate mesh of electric and acoustic, ethnic and urban, tradition and experiment".[2]

## History

The idea behind Maybe Monday was [Fred Frith](/source/Fred_Frith)'s when he suggested to [Miya Masaoka](/source/Miya_Masaoka) and [Larry Ochs](/source/Larry_Ochs_(musician)) that they perform together at a concert in San Francisco in March 1997. Frith, an [English](/source/England) [multi-instrumentalist](/source/Multi-instrumentalist), [composer](/source/Composer) and [improvisor](/source/Improvisation) was a founding member of the English [avant-rock](/source/Avant-rock) group [Henry Cow](/source/Henry_Cow), and was currently Composer-in-Residence in the Music Department at [Mills College](/source/Mills_College) in [Oakland, California](/source/Oakland,_California). Ochs was a founding member of the San Francisco-based [Rova Saxophone Quartet](/source/Rova_Saxophone_Quartet), and [Japanese American](/source/Japanese_American) [koto](/source/Koto_(musical_instrument)) player Masaoka was currently active in [jazz](/source/Jazz), [Western classical music](/source/Classical_music), [electronic music](/source/Electronic_music) and [traditional Japanese music](/source/Traditional_Japanese_music) on the [United States West Coast](/source/West_Coast_of_the_United_States). Masaoka had been a student at Mills College and both Frith and Masaoka had worked with Ochs's Rova Saxophone Quartet.[2]

After their debut performance at the Great American Music Hall, Maybe Monday went on to tour the West Coast and [Chicago](/source/Chicago) in 1998. A concert at [Frank Lloyd Wright](/source/Frank_Lloyd_Wright)'s [Unity Temple](/source/Unity_Temple) in Chicago in July 1998 was recorded live and released in 1999 on their debut album, *Saturn's Finger*.[3]

In 2001, Maybe Monday returned to the [San Francisco Bay Area](/source/San_Francisco_Bay_Area) for a series of performances with guest musician [Joan Jeanrenaud](/source/Joan_Jeanrenaud) on cello. One of the concerts in May 2001 at Guerilla Euphorics in Oakland was recorded live and released in 2002 on their second album, *Digital Wildlife*.[4] The same quartet appeared at the 19th [Festival International de Musique Actuelle de Victoriaville](/source/Festival_International_de_Musique_Actuelle_de_Victoriaville) in [Victoriaville](/source/Victoriaville), [Quebec](/source/Quebec), [Canada](/source/Canada) in May 2002.[5] In 2003 the original trio toured Europe, performing in [Marseille](/source/Marseille), [Brussels](/source/Brussels), [Nancy](/source/Nancy,_France), [Bordeaux](/source/Bordeaux), [Lille](/source/Lille) and [Frankfurt](/source/Frankfurt).[3]

In November 2006 Maybe Monday made their first [New York City](/source/New_York_City) appearance at [The Stone](/source/The_Stone_(music_space)) where they performed with guest musicians [Ikue Mori](/source/Ikue_Mori) (electronics), [Zeena Parkins](/source/Zeena_Parkins) (harp), [Carla Kihlstedt](/source/Carla_Kihlstedt) (violin) and [Gerry Hemingway](/source/Gerry_Hemingway) (percussion).[6] This septet then went on to record the group's first studio album, *[Unsquare](/source/Unsquare)* on November 18, 2006, at East Side Sound in New York City.[1][7] It was released in January 2008 and was described by one reviewer as "a very rich recording of electro-acoustic improvisation."[1]
