# Max Hooper (naturalist)

**Max Dorien Hooper** (20 November 1934 – 10 February 2017) was an English [naturalist](/source/Naturalist) and the inventor of "[Hooper's rule](/source/Hooper's_rule)" (also called "Hooper's law"), which is used to estimate the [age of a hedgerow](/source/Hedge#Dating).[1][2][3]

He received the [Peter Scott Memorial Award](/source/British_Naturalists'_Association#Peter_Scott_Memorial_Award).[1][4]
