While studying for his degree at [Cambridge University](/source/Cambridge_University), Field made his [first-class](/source/first-class_cricket) debut for [Cambridge University Cricket Club](/source/Cambridge_University_Cricket_Club) against [Yorkshire](/source/Yorkshire_County_Cricket_Club) in 1974.
