He was elected to the [Tasmanian House of Assembly](/source/Tasmanian_House_of_Assembly) in 1961 as a [Liberal](/source/Liberal_Party_of_Australia_(Tasmanian_Division)) member for [Bass](/source/Division_of_Bass_(state)). He was Chair of Committees from 1966 to 1972 and [Speaker](/source/Speaker_of_the_Tasmanian_House_of_Assembly) from 1982 to 1986.
