'''Max Brito''' (8 April 1968 – 19 December 2022)<ref>{{Cite news |title=Rugby: tétraplégique après le Mondial 95, l'ex-international ivoirien Max Brito est décédé |url=https://www.midilibre.fr/2022/12/20/rugby-tetraplegique-apres-le-mondial-95-lex-international-ivoirien-max-brito-est-decede-10880202.php |access-date=22 December 2022 |newspaper=Midi Libre |language=fr}}</ref> was an Ivorian [rugby union](/source/rugby_union) player on the [Ivory Coast rugby team](/source/Ivory_Coast_national_rugby_union_team). As a result of injuries sustained at the [1995 Rugby World Cup](/source/1995_Rugby_World_Cup) in South Africa, he was [paralysed](/source/paralysis).<ref>{{Cite news |url=https://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/rugby_union/rugby_world_cup/team_pages/tonga/2972133.stm |title=The good and bad of Tonga |publisher=BBC Sport |date=26 September 2003 |access-date=24 December 2022}}</ref> As of 2007, he could only move his head, torso and an arm.

== Career ==
Brito played as a [winger](/source/Winger_(sport)), and spent his career playing for [Biscarrosse Olympique](/source/Biscarrosse_Olympique) in the [Fédérale 3](/source/F%C3%A9d%C3%A9rale_3) division of French rugby.<ref name="histoire">{{Cite web |url=http://www.biscarrosserugby.fr/historique/HistoBO_v2.pdf |title=L'Historique du Biscarrosse Olympique Rugby |publisher=Biscarrosse Rugby |access-date=19 September 2011 |lang=fr}}</ref> An [electrician](/source/electrician) by trade,<ref name="histoire" /> he was noticeable on the field for his long dreadlocks as well as his brave play. Brito was called into the [Ivory Coast national rugby union team](/source/Ivory_Coast_national_rugby_union_team) for the [1995 Rugby World Cup](/source/1995_Rugby_World_Cup). Brito came on as a substitute in the opening game against [Scotland](/source/Scotland_national_rugby_union_team) which the Ivory Coast lost by 89 points to nil, a result which led many to question the inclusion of "minor" teams in the tournament. He played again in the second game for Les Elephants, who put in a vastly improved performance against [France](/source/France_national_rugby_union_team), despite losing 54–18.<ref name="talking">{{Cite web |url=http://talkingrugbyunion.co.uk/international-teams/rugby-world-cup-history-the-plight-of-max-brito |title=Rugby World Cup History – The Plight of Max Brito |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120321015547/http://talkingrugbyunion.co.uk/international-teams/rugby-world-cup-history-the-plight-of-max-brito |archive-date=21 March 2012 |work=Talking Rugby Union |date=29 August 2011 |access-date=20 September 2011}}</ref>

== Injury ==
Brito started Ivory Coast's third match against [Tonga](/source/Tonga_national_rugby_union_team) on 3 June.<ref name="mgsa">{{cite news |url=http://www.mg.co.za/article/2007-10-04-max-brito-at-end-of-tether-after-12year-struggle |title=Max Brito at end of tether after 12-year struggle |date=4 October 2007 |newspaper=Mail & Guardian}}</ref> He caught a high ball that had been kicked up the field, and set off on a counter-attack.<ref name="talking" /> He was tackled by [Inoke Afeaki](/source/Inoke_Afeaki), the Tonga [flanker](/source/flanker_(rugby_union)), before a [ruck](/source/Rugby_union_gameplay) formed over him. The ruck collapsed and several players fell on top of Brito, leaving him prone and motionless on the ground.<ref name="mgsa"/> Brito was taken to the intensive care unit of the Unitas Hospital in [Pretoria](/source/Pretoria) with broken vertebrae.<ref name="histoire" /> Operations were carried out to stabilise the fourth and fifth vertebrae, but Brito was left paralysed below the neck.<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.the42.ie/tragic-tale-max-brito-ivorian-paralysed-1995-world-cup-2332744-Sep2015/ |title=The tragic tale of Max Brito – the Ivorian player paralysed at the 1995 Rugby World Cup |date=17 September 2015 |work=The 42 |access-date=17 September 2015}}</ref>

After the accident, Brito was given treatment and compensation, which was funded by all sides competing at the [1995 Rugby World Cup](/source/1995_Rugby_World_Cup).<ref name="talking" /> Nevertheless, in 2007, it was reported that Brito was still largely unable to move, being bedridden most of the time, with only some limited movement in his chest and arms.<ref name="mgsa"/> He and his wife separated, whilst he had little contact with his sons, and he lived with his parents in Bordeaux.<ref name="mgsa"/> There was some criticism of how his case was handled, after the initial support: [Damian Hopley](/source/Damian_Hopley), Head of the Professional Rugby Players' Association, said in 2003, "We became involved in money-raising events for Max ... but there was very little support for him from Rugby World Cup."<ref name="mgsa"/>

In his 2007 interview, Brito was portrayed as living an unhappy life. He was quoted as saying:

<blockquote>It is now 12 years since I have been in this state. I have come to the end of my tether... If one day I fall seriously ill, and if I have the strength and courage to take my own life, then I will do it...This bloody handicap – it's my curse. It kills me and I will never accept it. I can't live with it and it's going to be with me for the rest of my life.<ref name="mgsa"/></blockquote>

But in 2020, in an interview with ''[i](/source/i_(British_newspaper))'', he revealed he had undergone a spiritual transformation that had helped him cope with his disability.<ref>{{cite news |last1=Godwin |first1=Hugh |title='Rugby World Cup injury left me in a wheelchair but I wouldn't discourage anyone from playing the game' |url=https://inews.co.uk/sport/rugby-union/max-brito-rugby-world-cup-neck-spinal-injury-wheelchair-cote-divoire-france-2872748 |work=[i](/source/i_(British_newspaper)) |date=3 June 2020 |access-date=24 December 2022}}</ref>

<blockquote>I would say there were 13 or 14 years of fog where I didn't know where I was. The accident was very violent. But after that I had a spiritual enlightenment and I understood that it was necessary to accept my handicap. And from that moment on, all the doors were open.</blockquote>
