Max Bonnell attended [Trinity Grammar School](/source/Trinity_Grammar_School_(New_South_Wales)) in [Sydney](/source/Sydney) (winning the [Lawrence Campbell Oratory Competition](/source/Lawrence_Campbell_Oratory_Competition) in 1979) before studying Arts and Law at the [University of Sydney](/source/University_of_Sydney). He is a lawyer specialising in international [arbitration](/source/arbitration). He was a partner in the [Sydney](/source/Sydney) office of the law firm [King & Wood Mallesons](/source/King_%26_Wood_Mallesons) for 18 years until he joined [White & Case](/source/White_%26_Case) in 2017.
