**Max Bog** is a 10.6 [hectare](/source/Hectare) [biological Site of Special Scientific Interest](/source/Biological_Site_of_Special_Scientific_Interest) in [North Somerset](/source/North_Somerset), [notified](/source/SSSI_notification) in 1988.

The site is owned by North Somerset Council and managed by the [Avon Wildlife Trust](/source/Avon_Wildlife_Trust) for the range of wetland plants that it supports. There is no access without a permit.

## Ecology

[Marsh Helleborine](/source/Marsh_Helleborine) occurs here and nowhere else in [Avon](/source/Avon_(county)).[1] [Lesser Butterfly-orchid](/source/Lesser_Butterfly-orchid) and [Fragrant Orchid](/source/Fragrant_Orchid) also occur here, and at only one other Avon site each.[2] It is also home to [Yellow Rattle](/source/Yellow_Rattle), [Meadow Sweet](/source/Meadow_Sweet) and [Meadow Thistle](/source/Cirsium_dissectum). The reserve is also important for its invertebrate interest and is home to many species of [moth](/source/Moth), [grasshopper](/source/Grasshopper) and [dragonfly](/source/Dragonfly).[3]

[Narrow-leaved Marsh-orchid](/source/Narrow-leaved_Marsh-orchid) is found in adjacent fields.[4]

*[Dactylorhiza](/source/Dactylorhiza)* orchids are well represented, including the hybrids *D. × grandis* and *D. × hallii*.[4]
