==Life and career==
Angus was born in [Hobart](/source/Hobart), [Tasmania](/source/Tasmania) in 1914. In 1931, he studied art at Hobart Technical College and worked as a sign writer.<ref name="abc">{{cite news|title=Tasmanian artist Max Angus dies at 102|url=http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-02-25/tasmanian-artist-max-angus-dies/8301260|accessdate=25 February 2017|work=[ABC News](/source/ABC_News_(Australia))|date=25 February 2017|language=en-AU}}</ref> He later moved to Melbourne to start a commercial art studio with his brother, Don. In 1942, Angus enlisted in the army during World War II, working as the head of the map drafting room in the intelligence department. In 1967, Angus was one of several Tasmanian artists and photographers who protested the proposed flooding of [Lake Pedder](/source/Lake_Pedder) by documenting the original state of the lake in art and photographs. When the photographer [Olegas Truchanas](/source/Olegas_Truchanas) drowned in the Gordon River in 1972, Angus wrote a definitive tribute to his friend, ''The World of Olegas Truchanas'', published in 1975.<ref name="alcorso">{{cite web | title=Max Angus CV | work=Alcorso Foundation | url=https://www.alcorso.org.au/assets/Max_Angus_CV.pdf | archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180313051134/https://www.alcorso.org.au/assets/Max_Angus_CV.pdf | archive-date=March 13, 2018 | url-status=dead }}</ref>
