# Mavis Chirandu

**Mavis Chirandu** (born 15 January 1995) is a [Zimbabwean](/source/Zimbabwe) [footballer](/source/Association_football) who plays for Weerams F.C. and the [Zimbabwe women's national football team](/source/Zimbabwe_women's_national_football_team).

## Biography and career

As a [newborn](/source/Infant), Chirandu was abandoned by her mother in some roadside bushes. She was brought up in an [SOS Children's Villages](/source/SOS_Children's_Villages) [orphanage](/source/Orphanage) in [Bindura](/source/Bindura).[2] She played for the senior [Zimbabwe](/source/Zimbabwe_women's_national_football_team) team for the first time in 2013, against [Uruguay](/source/Uruguay_women's_national_football_team). She acquired the nickname "Madam Chair" after Zimbabwe's women's football chairman Mavis Gumbo, and scored her first international goal in a 6–1 win over [Lesotho](/source/Lesotho_women's_national_football_team) in November 2013.[3]

At 21 years old, left-sided midfielder Chirandu was included in the national squad for the [2016 Summer Olympics](/source/Football_at_the_2016_Summer_Olympics_%E2%80%93_Women's_tournament).[4] She scored Zimbabwe's late consolation goal in their [3–1 group stage defeat](/source/Football_at_the_2016_Summer_Olympics_%E2%80%93_Women's_tournament_%E2%80%93_Group_F#INDIA_vs_Zimbabwe) by [Canada](/source/Canada_women's_national_soccer_team) at [Arena Corinthians](/source/Arena_Corinthians), [São Paulo](/source/S%C3%A3o_Paulo).[5]
