Caranta started his career with [Instituto de Córdoba](/source/Instituto_Atl%C3%A9tico_Central_C%C3%B3rdoba) in 1999. He helped Instituto to win the [Primera B Nacional](/source/Primera_B_Nacional_Argentina) [Apertura](/source/Apertura_and_Clausura_in_Argentine_football) in the  [2003–04 season](/source/2003%E2%80%9304_in_Argentine_football) and promotion to the [Primera División](/source/Argentine_Primera_Divisi%C3%B3n) at the end of the 2003–04 season. He made a total of 139 league appearances for Instituto.

In 2005, he moved to Mexican club [Santos Laguna](/source/Club_Santos_Laguna), where he made 47 league appearances before returning to Argentina to sign for Boca Juniors in 2007.
