# Maurice Foxell

**Maurice Frederic Foxell** [KCVO](/source/Royal_Victorian_Order) (1888–1981),[1] (Knight Commander of the [Royal Victorian Order](/source/Royal_Victorian_Order)) was a British clergyman, artist, and author.

Foxell received his education at [Christ's Hospital](/source/Christ's_Hospital) and [The Queen's College, Oxford](/source/The_Queen's_College,_Oxford).[2] He held offices in the [Church of England](/source/Church_of_England) including assistant curate at [St Paul's, Hammersmith](/source/St_Paul's,_Hammersmith) from February 1914 to January 1915), assistant curate in [Friern Barnet](/source/Friern_Barnet) from January 1915 to March 1917, minor canon at [St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle](/source/St_George's_Chapel,_Windsor_Castle) from March 1917 to December 1918, minor canon at [St Paul's Cathedral](/source/St_Paul's_Cathedral) from 1921 to 1939, and rector of [St James Garlickhythe](/source/St_James_Garlickhythe) from 1939 to 1964.[3]

Foxell served as [Deputy Clerk of the Closet](/source/Deputy_Clerk_of_the_Closet), the domestic chaplain to [King George VI](/source/George_VI)[4] and later to [Queen Elizabeth II](/source/Elizabeth_II).[5]

His other titles included precentor and sub-dean of the Chapels Royal[6] and, earlier, priest-in-ordinary to George VI.[7] He assisted at the christening of [Charles, Prince of Wales](/source/Charles,_Prince_of_Wales)[6] and the baptism of [Prince Andrew, Duke of York](/source/Prince_Andrew,_Duke_of_York).[5] In his office, he represented the [Royal Household](/source/Royal_Households_of_the_United_Kingdom) at funerals[4][7][8] and conducted religious services.[9] He retired from the office in 1965.[10]

Foxell was also noted for his printmaking and watercolours.[2] His watercolour *Trees and Barn* is displayed by the [Government Art Collection](/source/Government_Art_Collection) in London.[11]

He wrote several books, including *An Account of the College of Minor Canons of St Paul's Cathedral* (1931), *The St Paul's Cathedral Psalter Pointed for Chanting* (1934), and *Wren's Craftsmen at St Paul's Cathedral* (1935).[12] Foxell also wrote the children's book *Ten Little Pigs*.[12] Some of his private papers are now held by the [Imperial War Museum](/source/Imperial_War_Museum).[3]
