==Life==
Orr studied Botany at [University College, Cardiff](/source/University_College%2C_Cardiff).  From 1906 to 1913 he lectured in botany at the [University of Cardiff](/source/University_of_Cardiff). In 1913, he moved to [Edinburgh](/source/Edinburgh) to oversee the [Royal Botanic Gardens](/source/Royal_Botanic_Garden%2C_Edinburgh).

In the [First World War](/source/First_World_War) he served as a lieutenant in the 7th battalion [Royal Scots](/source/Royal_Scots) in [Gallipoli](/source/Gallipoli) and [Palestine](/source/Palestine_(region)). He returned to the Royal Botanic Gardens after the war and worked under [William Wright Smith](/source/William_Wright_Smith). He later worked with both [John Macqueen Cowan](/source/John_Macqueen_Cowan) and [Roland Edgar Cooper](/source/Roland_Edgar_Cooper).

In 1932, he was elected a Fellow of the [Royal Society of Edinburgh](/source/Royal_Society_of_Edinburgh).
