Matthew William was born in [Sabah](/source/Sabah) in 1976,<ref name="CAP" /> Matthew William made his debut for Malaysia in the [Stan Nagaiah Trophy](/source/Stan_Nagaiah_Trophy) series against [Singapore](/source/Singapore_national_cricket_team) in 1995. He did not play for them in 1996, returning for the same series in February 1997.<ref name="OthM" /> He represented Malaysia at the [1997 ICC Trophy](/source/1997_ICC_Trophy), which was played in [Kuala Lumpur](/source/Kuala_Lumpur).<ref name="ICCT">[http://www.cricketarchive.co.uk/Archive/Players/21/21147/ICC_Trophy_Matches.html ICC Trophy matches played by Matthew William] at CricketArchive</ref>

After playing in the [Saudara Cup](/source/Saudara_Cup) match for the only time in September 1997,<ref name="OthM" /> he made his [List A](/source/List_A_cricket) debut in 1998, playing four matches for Malaysia in the Wills Cup, a Pakistani domestic one-day tournament.
