**Matthew Ryan Vickers** (born 1985) is an American [operatic](/source/Opera) tenor from [Telford, Pennsylvania](/source/Telford,_Pennsylvania), who performs internationally in leading roles from the *[tenore spinto](/source/Spinto)* repertoire. His most frequently performed roles are Alfredo Germont in *[La traviata](/source/La_traviata)*, B. F. Pinkerton in *[Madama Butterfly](/source/Madama_Butterfly)*, and Rodolfo in *[La bohème](/source/La_boh%C3%A8me)*.

## Life and education

Vickers attended [Christopher Dock Mennonite High School](/source/Dock_Mennonite_Academy), where he began singing in the school [choir](/source/Choir). He performed in his first opera at the age of 20, appearing as a chorus member in Leoncavallo's *[Pagliacci](/source/Pagliacci)*. He studied at [Lynchburg College](/source/University_of_Lynchburg), graduating with a [Bachelor of Music](/source/Bachelor_of_Music) in 2009. He went on to study [Italian singing](/source/Bel_canto) at the Penn State School of Music at [Pennsylvania State University](/source/Pennsylvania_State_University) with Graham Sanders,[1] receiving his [Master of Music](/source/Master_of_Music) in Voice Performance in 2012.[2] That same year, he sang in the American Institute for Musical Studies competition in [Graz](/source/Graz), winning 3rd prize. In subsequent years he was a finalist in the 2013 [Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions](/source/Metropolitan_Opera_National_Council_Auditions), the district of [Philadelphia](/source/Philadelphia), and the 2014 [Washington, D.C.](/source/Washington,_D.C.) region competition. In 2015 he came third in the Annapolis Opera Vocal Competition, and received a young [alumni](/source/Alumni) award from Dock Menonite Academy.[3] He performed the roles of Rodolfo in *[La bohème](/source/La_boh%C3%A8me)* with the Penn State Opera Theatre and Turiddu in *[Cavalleria rusticana](/source/Cavalleria_rusticana)* with the Minnesota Concert Opera. He became an apprentice artist at the [Sarasota Opera](/source/Sarasota_Opera) in 2015 and a studio artist the following year.[4]

## Career

Vickers made his official opera debut while he was still a studio artist, stepping in as Arrigo in Verdi's *[La battaglia di Legnano](/source/La_battaglia_di_Legnano)* after the first scene.[5] In the same year, he also attracted attention in the role of Laerte in Franco Faccio's *[Amleto](/source/Amleto)* with [Opera Delaware](/source/Opera_Delaware),[6] in the titlerole in *[L'amico Fritz](/source/L'amico_Fritz)* with Boston Midsummer Opera,[7] and in his debut[8] as Don José in *[Carmen](/source/Carmen)* with Opera Western Reserve.[9]

In 2017, his portrayal of Avito in Italo Montemezzi's rarely performed opera *[L'amore dei tre re](/source/L'amore_dei_tre_re)* garnered attention to the [spinto](/source/Spinto) qualities of his voice.[10] He made guest appearances with numerous other role debuts, including Sam Polk in *[Susannah](/source/Susannah)* at [Opera Roanoke](/source/Opera_Roanoke), Luigi in *[Il tabarro](/source/Il_tabarro)* with the [Opera Company of Middlebury](/source/Opera_Company_of_Middlebury), the Duke of Mantua in *[Rigoletto](/source/Rigoletto)* at [Charlottesville Opera](/source/Charlottesville_Opera), Arnold in *[Guillaume Tell](/source/William_Tell_(opera))* at [Opera Southwest](/source/Opera_Southwest), and Edgardo in *[Lucia di Lammermoor](/source/Lucia_di_Lammermoor)* with Opera Western Reserve.[2] Renato des Grieux in *[Manon Lescaut](/source/Manon_Lescaut_(Puccini))* at [Sarasota Opera](/source/Sarasota_Opera) and B. F. Pinkerton in *[Madama Butterfly](/source/Madama_Butterfly)* at [Opera Memphis](/source/Opera_Memphis) followed in 2018.[2]

Vickers, who had specialised in [Italian operas](/source/Italian_opera) in the USA,[2] made his debut in [Italy](/source/Italy) in [French](/source/French_language),[11] performing as Don José in the [French opera](/source/French_opera) *Carmen* at the Macerata Opera Festival in the [Sferisterio di Macerata](/source/Sferisterio_di_Macerata) arena in the summer of 2019.[12][13] The performance also marked the Italian debuts of [Irene Roberts](/source/Irene_Roberts_(singer)) in the title role and [David Bižić](/source/David_Bi%C5%BEi%C4%87) as Escamillo, and was aired live on [Rai 3](/source/Rai_3) radio.[14] Soon after, Vickers was able to showcase his Italian skills in Italy as a last-minute jump in for the Duca di Mantova in *Rigoletto*.[15] Returned to the US, he debuted as Canio in *[Pagliacci](/source/Pagliacci)* with the Savannah Opera and as Cavaradossi in *[Tosca](/source/Tosca)* with the [Virginia Opera](/source/Virginia_Opera).[2] He won a grant at the [Giulio Gari International Vocal Competition](/source/Giulio_Gari#Giulio_Gari_International_Vocal_Competition) in the same year.[16]

In January 2020, Vickers sang the role of the Prince Dimitri in Alfano's *[Risurrezione](/source/Risurrezione)* in Rosetta Cucchi's staging at the [Maggio Musicale Fiorentino](/source/Maggio_Musicale_Fiorentino) festival,[17] which was released on DVD.[18]

Other planned performances planned for the year that became the first of the COVID-19 pandemic were canceled,[2] including a production of *Carmen* by Vicker's alma mater, the Penn State School of Music.[19] The 50th anniversary celebration of AIMS in [Graz](/source/Graz), Austria, at which he had been invited to perform, was also canceled due to COVID-19.[20] However, Vickers sang in the pandemic-friendly open-air concerts Drive-Through Arias and Opera Jukebox by Opera Delaware, which was celebrating its 75th anniversary.[21][22]

In 2021, Vickers made his house and role debut as Malcolm in [David McVicar](/source/David_McVicar)'s staging of Verdi's *[Macbeth](/source/Macbeth_(Verdi))* at the [Lyric Opera of Chicago](/source/Lyric_Opera_of_Chicago), conducted by [Enrique Mazzola](/source/Enrique_Mazzola), and starring [Sondra Radvanovsky](/source/Sondra_Radvanovsky) as Lady Macbeth.[23] In 2022, he made his role debut as Foresto in *[Attila](/source/Attila_(opera))* at Sarasota Opera, as Maurizio in *[Adriana Lecouvreur](/source/Adriana_Lecouvreur)* at Opera Baltimore, and as Romeo in [Riccardo Zandonai](/source/Riccardo_Zandonai)'s *Giulietta e Romeo* with New York's [Teatro Grattacielo](/source/Teatro_Grattacielo).[2][24] In November 2022, he sang the role of Charlie Silver in the world premiere of Craig Carnahan's *Requiem for Frankie Silver*, with a libretto by Craig Fields.[25] The production was staged and conducted by Carnahan, and featured soprano Lauren Senden in the title role.[26] In 2023, Vickers sang the role of Pollione in *[Norma](/source/Norma_(opera))* with [Opera Tampa](/source/Opera_Tampa),[2] and the role of Alfredo in *[La traviata](/source/La_traviata)* in a joint production by [Opera Delaware](/source/Opera_Delaware) and Opera Baltimore.[27]

Vickers moved to Germany to join the soloists' ensemble at the [Staatstheater Darmstadt](/source/Staatstheater_Darmstadt) in 2023. Once more he made his role debut, house debut and country debut in [French](/source/French_language), in the title role of Offenbach's *[Les contes d'Hoffmann](/source/Les_contes_d'Hoffmann)*,[28] conducted by [Generalmusikdirektor](/source/Music_director) (GMD) [Daniel Cohen](/source/Daniel_Cohen_(conductor)).[29] His first [Italian language](/source/Italian_language) role in Darmstadt was Alfredo in *La traviata*, he also sang this role as a guest at the [Theater Osnabrück](/source/Theater_Osnabr%C3%BCck) that same season.[30] In 2024, Vickers sang Aegisth in *[Elektra](/source/Elektra_(opera))* in a staging by [Karsten Wiegand](/source/Karsten_Wiegand), the [intendant](/source/Theater_manager) of Staatstheater Darmstadt.[30] He also made his house debuts at [Staatstheater Meiningen](/source/Meiningen_Court_Theatre) in the title role in *[Don Carlos](/source/Don_Carlos)* in French in [Achim Freyer](/source/Achim_Freyer)'s staging, conducted by GMD [Killian Farrell](/source/Killian_Farrell),[31] and as Pinkerton in *[Madama Butterfly](/source/Madama_Butterfly)* at the Landestheater Eisenach.[30] The following year, in 2025, he debuted in the same role at the Stadttheater Heilbronn[30] and the [Theater Koblenz](/source/Theater_Koblenz).[32] Also in 2025, Vickers sang Melot in Wagner's *[Tristan und Isolde](/source/Tristan_und_Isolde)* at the Staatstheater Darmstadt, in the staging by Eva-Maria Höckmayr, with Magdalena Anna Hofmann as Isolde and Heiko Börner as Tristan.[33] Vickers sang Masaniello in Auber's *[La muette de Portici](/source/La_muette_de_Portici)* in Paul Georg Dittrich's staging, with [Megan Marie Hart](/source/Megan_Marie_Hart) as Elvire and Ricardo Garcia as Alfonso.[34] He sang the Drum Major in Berg's *[Wozzeck](/source/Wozzeck)* in Wiegand's staging, with Oliver Zwarg in the title role, and GMD Cohen conducting.[35] At the beginning of the 2025/2026 season, Vickers debuted in the role of Radamès in *[Aida](/source/Aida)* alongside Hart in the title role, and [Aris Argiris](/source/Aris_Argiris) as Amonasro[36] in a co-production between the Staatstheater Darmstadt and the [Finnish National Opera](/source/Finnish_National_Opera_and_Ballet) directed by Noa Naamat[37] and conducted by [first Kapellmeister](/source/Kapellmeister#Contemporary_usage) and deputy GMD Johannes Zahn.[38]
