**Sir Matthew James Nicklin** [FRSA](/source/Fellow_of_the_Royal_Society_of_Arts) (born 1970)[1] is an [English](/source/English_law) [High Court judge](/source/High_Court_judge_(England_and_Wales)).

Nicklin was born in [Oxford](/source/Oxford), England. He was educated at [Tasker Milward Voluntary Controlled School](/source/Tasker_Milward_Voluntary_Controlled_School) in [Haverfordwest](/source/Haverfordwest). In 1992, he took a [First](/source/First-class_honours) in [Law](/source/LLB) from [Newcastle University](/source/Newcastle_University).[1]

Nicklin was [called to the bar](/source/Call_to_the_bar) at [Lincoln's Inn](/source/Lincoln's_Inn) in 1993 and practised from 1996, specialising in privacy and defamation law. In addition to practice, he wrote *The Law of Privacy and the Media* in 2002 which was taken into a third edition.[1]

He served as a [recorder](/source/Recorder_(judge)) from 2009 to 2017 and [took silk](/source/Queen's_Counsel) in 2013. He was joint-head of chambers at 5RB from 2014 to 2017. He was a member of the [Bar Standards Board](/source/Bar_Standards_Board) from 2007 to 2013. In 2010, he was elected a [Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts](/source/Fellow_of_the_Royal_Society_of_Arts). He is on [Newcastle Law School](/source/Newcastle_University#Newcastle_Law_School)'s advisory board.[1][2][3]

On 2 October 2017, Nicklin was appointed a judge of the High Court and assigned to the [Queen's Bench Division](/source/Queen's_Bench_Division_of_the_High_Court_of_Justice_of_England_and_Wales).[4] He took the customary [knighthood](/source/Knight_Bachelor) in the same year.[1] Since February 2021, he has been Judge in Charge of the Media and Communications List.[5]

On 22 July 2021, Nicklin presided over the *Jamal Hijazi* v *[Stephen Yaxley-Lennon](/source/Tommy_Robinson)* case.[6][7]
