**Matthew 8:33** is the 33rd [verse](/source/Chapters_and_verses_of_the_Bible) in [the eighth chapter](/source/Matthew_8) of the [Gospel of Matthew](/source/Gospel_of_Matthew) in the [New Testament](/source/New_Testament).

## Content

In the original Greek according to [Westcott-Hort](/source/Westcott-Hort), [Textus Receptus](/source/Textus_Receptus) and [Byzantine Majority](/source/Byzantine_text-type), this verse is:

- Οἱ δὲ βόσκοντες ἔφυγον, καὶ ἀπελθόντες εἰς τὴν πόλιν ἀπήγγειλαν πάντα, καὶ τὰ τῶν δαιμονιζομένων.

In the [King James Version](/source/King_James_Version) of the [Bible](/source/Bible) the text reads:

- And they that kept them fled, and went their ways into the city, and told every thing, and what was befallen to the possessed of the devils.

The [New International Version](/source/New_International_Version) translates the passage as:

- Those tending the pigs ran off, went into the town and reported all this, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men.

## Analysis

This verse is a part of the narrative to show Jesus' authority and his relationship to the Gentiles (cf. [Matthew 8:5](/source/Matthew_8:5)–[13](/source/Matthew_8:13)). The location in the Decapolis and the fact that swine are being raised nearby indicate a non-Jewish area, along the east coast of the [Sea of Galilee](/source/Sea_of_Galilee), where the population was mixed.[1] The parallel verses ([Mark 5](/source/Mark_5) and [Luke 8](/source/Luke_8)) mention that the news was also spread outside the city in the countryside.[2] The swine herds ran to report what had happened to their masters and to everybody they met along the way.[3]
