**Matthew 1:5** is the fifth verse of [the first chapter](/source/Matthew_1) in the [Gospel of Matthew](/source/Gospel_of_Matthew) in the [New Testament](/source/New_Testament). The verse is part of the section where the [genealogy](/source/Genealogy) of [Joseph](/source/Saint_Joseph), the legal father of [Jesus](/source/Jesus), is listed.

## Content

In the [King James Version](/source/King_James_Version) of the [Bible](/source/Bible) the text reads:

- And [Salmon](/source/Salmon_(biblical_figure)) begat [Boaz](/source/Boaz) of [Rachab](/source/Rahab);
- and Boaz begat [Obed](/source/Obed_(biblical_figure)) of [Ruth](/source/Ruth_(biblical_figure));
- and Obed begat [Jesse](/source/Jesse_(biblical_figure));

The [World English Bible](/source/World_English_Bible) translates the passage as:

- Salmon became the father of Boaz by Rahab.
- Boaz became the father of Obed by Ruth.
- Obed became the father of Jesse.

## Analysis

*For a full discussion of the women mentioned in Matthew's genealogy, see [Matthew 1:3#Analysis](/source/Matthew_1:3#Analysis)*.

This genealogy matches that given in several other places in the Bible, including . It covers the period after the [Exodus](/source/The_Exodus) to around the founding of the [Kingdom of Israel](/source/Kingdom_of_Israel_(united_monarchy)). The passage carries the genealogy through [Salmon](/source/Salmon_(Bible)), Boaz, Obed, and Jesse of which only Boaz is notable. It also mentions two women, Rahab and Ruth, both of whom are prominent [Old Testament](/source/Old_Testament) figures.[citation needed]

[William F. Albright](/source/William_F._Albright) and C.S. Mann note that the author of Matthew spells Rahab's name as *Rachab*, a departure from the [Septuagint](/source/Septuagint) spelling Matthew usually uses. The *Rachab* form also appears in the works of [Josephus](/source/Josephus). They speculate that this indicates a change in pronunciation during this period.[1] Another problem, pointed out by [Raymond E. Brown](/source/Raymond_E._Brown), is that Rahab's position in this verse does not meet other traditions. No other source has her marrying Salmon and giving birth to Boaz. Jewish tradition has her as the wife of [Joshua](/source/Joshua), and therefore living in a different time period.[2]
