# Matt Scannell

**Matthew Bennett Scannell** (born February 10, 1970)[2][3] is an American musician. Scannell is the lead vocalist, lead guitarist, primary songwriter, and founding member of the alternative rock band [Vertical Horizon](/source/Vertical_Horizon).[4]

## Early life and education

Scannell is a native of [Worcester, Massachusetts](/source/Worcester,_Massachusetts).[4][5] He was given his first guitar when he was seven years old.[6] Scannell attended high school at [Deerfield Academy](/source/Deerfield_Academy) in [Deerfield, Massachusetts](/source/Deerfield,_Massachusetts).[5]

Scannell enrolled at [Georgetown University](/source/Georgetown_University) in Washington D.C. after graduation from high school.[4] In 1992, Scannell received a [bachelor's degree](/source/Bachelor's_degree) in [psychology](/source/Psychology) from Georgetown University.[5][7]

## Career

In 1990, Scannell and another Georgetown student, [Keith Kane](/source/Keith_Kane), formed the band [Vertical Horizon](/source/Vertical_Horizon).[4] The two began performing in Washington clubs in October 1991.[5]

The duo released their first album, *[There and Back Again](/source/There_and_Back_Again_(Vertical_Horizon_album))*, in 1992 after graduation from Georgetown.[4] Scannell has since appeared as the lead vocalist of all of Vertical Horizon's albums.

Singer [Richard Marx](/source/Richard_Marx) and Scannell collaborated to release the albums *[Duo](/source/Duo_(Richard_Marx_and_Matt_Scannell_album))* in 2008 and *[Duo Live](/source/Duo_Live)* in 2010. On June 8, 2011, Scannell appeared at the Arcada Theatre in [St. Charles, Illinois](/source/St._Charles,_Illinois), with actor [Hugh Jackman](/source/Hugh_Jackman).[8] Scannell and Jackman were invited to perform as guests of Marx.[8]
