He was first based in [York](/source/York) during his time as an official,<ref>[https://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/fa_cup/1760104.stm Example] report quoting [York](/source/York) as his initial place of residence: [BBC.co.uk](/source/BBC.co.uk) website.</ref> subsequently moving to [Barnsley](/source/Barnsley), also in the county of [Yorkshire](/source/Yorkshire). His other occupation was as a [physical education](/source/Physical_education_class) teacher.

==Career==
He first took up refereeing in 1982, whilst still playing (for the [Hertfordshire](/source/Hertfordshire) county team, and for [St John's College](/source/York_St_John_University) in York).<ref name="thisisyork">[https://archive.today/20130505090050/http://archive.thisisyork.co.uk/2003/10/15/258063.html Biographical detail] from a newspaper article: ''ThisIsYork.co.uk'' website.</ref> His playing career ended after cartilage problems in 1984, and he became a PE Teacher at Filey School before taking up a post as head of PE in [Thirsk](/source/Thirsk). At about this time, he started to get more involved in refereeing, first handling matches in the [York and District Saturday League](/source/York_Football_League), then progressing to the [Northern Counties East League](/source/Northern_Counties_East_Football_League).<ref name="thisisyork" />

After further promotions to the [Football Combination](/source/Football_Combination) and the [Football Conference](/source/Football_Conference),<ref name="thisisyork" /> he was appointed as an [assistant referee](/source/Assistant_referee_(association_football)) on [the Football League](/source/the_Football_League) list in 1991, and in 1992, he advanced to the [Premier League](/source/Premier_League) assistants' list. This was bettered in 1994 when he received the call from [FIFA](/source/FIFA) to officiate for them as an assistant also.<ref name="flprofile" />

In 1996, Messias became a Football League referee, and stepped up to the Premier League in season [2000–01](/source/2000%E2%80%9301_in_English_football), refereeing his first match on 16 December 2000 at [Pride Park](/source/Pride_Park_Stadium), when [Derby County](/source/Derby_County_F.C.) defeated [Coventry City](/source/Coventry_City_F.C.) 1–0, thanks to a [Malcolm Christie](/source/Malcolm_Christie) goal after 9 minutes.<ref>[https://archive.today/20120912012936/http://www.soccerbase.com/results3.sd?gameid=298940 First ever Premiership game], Derby v. In 2003, he was appointed to the list of [FIFA](/source/FIFA) referees. Also in that year, he moved to [Barnsley](/source/Barnsley) from his previous home in [York](/source/York). He had recently married, and the couple had recently had a baby together.<ref name ="thisisyork" /> Messias gained brief notoriety in August 2003 when, while refereeing a match between [Newcastle United](/source/Newcastle_United) and [Birmingham City](/source/Birmingham_City), he accidentally struck [Robbie Savage](/source/Robbie_Savage) in the face while signalling for a free kick.<ref>{{cite web |title=Newcastle crash again |url=https://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/eng_prem/3172823.stm |publisher=BBC Sport |date=30 August 2003 |access-date=14 July 2020}}</ref>
