==Playing career==
Kassian made his NHL debut during the 2010-11 season after originally being selected in the second round, 57th overall, by Minnesota in the [2005 NHL entry draft](/source/2005_NHL_entry_draft).<ref>{{cite web| title = Senators acquire forward Matt Kassian from Minnesota in exchange for Ottawa's sixth-round draft pick in 2014| url = http://senators.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=659799 | website = [Ottawa Senators](/source/Ottawa_Senators) | date = 2013-06-26 | accessdate = 2013-06-25}}</ref> His junior hockey career was spent with the [Vancouver Giants](/source/Vancouver_Giants) of the [WHL](/source/Western_Hockey_League).

On November 3, 2010, the [Minnesota Wild](/source/Minnesota_Wild) recalled Kassian from the [American Hockey League](/source/American_Hockey_League)'s [Houston Aeros](/source/Houston_Aeros_(1994%E2%80%932013)).<ref>{{cite web| url = http://wild.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=542465 | title = Wild recall Kassian; Latendresse on IR | publisher = [Minnesota Wild](/source/Minnesota_Wild) | date = 2010-11-03 | accessdate = 2010-11-03}}</ref> During the month of November 2010 Kassian played four games for the Wild, collecting 12 minutes in penalties and no points, with only a single shot on goal. He was then assigned back to the Aeros in December. He was re-called from the Aeros in mid-January.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8471719&view=log&season=20112012|title=Matt Kassian (NHL Player Profile)|website=[National Hockey League](/source/National_Hockey_League)|accessdate=19 February 2012}}</ref> He recorded his first NHL goal on March 1, 2012 in the first period of a game against the [Montreal Canadiens](/source/Montreal_Canadiens). Following the 2013-14 season, Kassian was not re-signed by Ottawa. "I wanted to be back and they felt otherwise. That's their right as an organization," he said.<ref>{{cite news| title = Ex-Senator Kassian still looking for work | url = http://www.ottawasun.com/2014/09/02/ex-senator-kassian-still-looking-for-work | newspaper = [Ottawa Sun](/source/Ottawa_Sun) | date = 2014-09-02 | accessdate = 2014-09-02}}</ref>
