# Matt Haack

**Matthew Scott Haack** (HAHK; born July 25, 1994) is an American professional [football](/source/American_football) [punter](/source/Punter_(football)). He played [college football](/source/College_football) for the [Arizona State University Sun Devils](/source/Arizona_State_Sun_Devils_football). He played his first four seasons in the [National Football League](/source/National_Football_League) (NFL) with the [Miami Dolphins](/source/Miami_Dolphins), who signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2017. Haack later spent one season with the [Buffalo Bills](/source/Buffalo_Bills) before joining the [Indianapolis Colts](/source/Indianapolis_Colts) in 2022. He has also played for the [New York Giants](/source/New_York_Giants).

## Early life

Haack graduated from [Dowling Catholic High School](/source/Dowling_Catholic_High_School) in 2013. He was rated by [Rivals.com](/source/Rivals.com) as the No. 15 kicker in the nation and the state of Iowa's No. 10 overall prospect.[1] On September 14, 2018, Haack was inducted into the Dowling Catholic High School/St. Joseph Academy Athletic Hall of Fame for his exemplary high school career.[2]

## College career

Haack attended and played [college football](/source/College_football) for Arizona State from 2013 to 2016.[3] In the 2013 season, he shared the [punting](/source/Gridiron_punt) duties with Alex Garoutte, Dom Vizzare, and [Taylor Kelly](/source/Taylor_Kelly).[4] He finished with 16 punts for 612 net yards for a 38.3 average.[5] In the 2014 season, he handled most of the punting duties with Taylor Kelly and [Mike Bercovici](/source/Mike_Bercovici) handling the rest of the work.[6] He finished with 53 punts for 2,296 net yards for a 43.3 average.[7] In the 2015 season, he handled all but three punts, which went to Bercovici.[8] He finished with 74 punts for 3,186 net yards for a 43.1 average.[9] He finished fifth nationally and fourth in the [Pac-12](/source/Pac-12) in averaging 43.1 yards per punt in 2015.[10] As a senior in 2016, he handled all of the team's punts except for three by teammate [Manny Wilkins](/source/Manny_Wilkins).[11] He had 66 punts for 2,897 net yards for a 44.4 average.[12]

## Professional career

### Miami Dolphins

On May 5, 2017, Haack was signed as an undrafted free agent to a three-year, $1.67 million contract.[13][14]

He earned the Dolphins starting punter job as a rookie, beating out incumbent punter [Matt Darr](/source/Matt_Darr).[15]

On September 17, 2017, he made his NFL debut against the [Los Angeles Chargers](/source/Los_Angeles_Chargers). He had three punts for 130 total yards (43.33 average).[16] Overall, in the 2017 season, he finished with 83 punts for 3,695 net yards for a 44.52 average.[17]

In Week 9 of the 2018 season, Haack was named [American Football Conference](/source/American_Football_Conference) Special Teams Player of the Week after averaging 44.7 yards on nine punts in a 13–6 win over the [New York Jets](/source/New_York_Jets).[18] Overall, Haack had 87 punts for 3,884 net yards for a 44.64-yard average in the 2018 season.[19]

On December 1, 2019, Haack was the centerpiece of a [trick play](/source/Trick_play) in which he completed a one-yard touchdown pass to kicker [Jason Sanders](/source/Jason_Sanders) in the [end zone](/source/End_zone) during the 37–31 win, marking the NFL's first touchdown pass to a kicker since October 16, 1977.[20][21] Overall, Haack had 69 punts for 3,105 net yards for a 45.00-yard average in the 2019 season.[22]

On April 1, 2020, Haack was re-signed to a one-year, $2.133 million contract.[23] In the 2020 season, Haack had 68 punts for a 44.7 average.[24]

### Buffalo Bills (first stint)

On March 18, 2021, Haack signed a three-year contract with the [Buffalo Bills](/source/Buffalo_Bills).[25][26] In the 2021 season, Haack had 52 punts for a 42.9 average.[27] He was released on August 22, 2022, after losing the punter position to rookie [Matt Araiza](/source/Matt_Araiza).[28]

### Indianapolis Colts

On August 24, 2022, Haack signed a one-year contract with the [Indianapolis Colts](/source/Indianapolis_Colts).[29] In the 2022 season, Haack had 70 punts for a 44.8 average.[30]

### Arizona Cardinals (first stint)

On May 15, 2023, Haack signed with the [Arizona Cardinals](/source/Arizona_Cardinals).[31] He was waived on August 21, 2023.[32]

### Cleveland Browns

On December 26, 2023, Haack was signed to the [practice squad](/source/Practice_squad) of the [Cleveland Browns](/source/Cleveland_Browns).[33] On December 28, against the [Jets](/source/New_York_Jets), he punted 3 times with an average of 51.7 yards. He was released on January 2, 2024.[34]

### Buffalo Bills (second stint)

On January 17, 2024, Haack signed with the practice squad of the Bills after their punter [Sam Martin](/source/Sam_Martin_(American_football)) suffered a hamstring injury during their playoff game against the [Pittsburgh Steelers](/source/Pittsburgh_Steelers).[35] He was released three days later. He was re-signed on March 6, 2024.[36] On May 31, Haack was once more released by Buffalo.[37]

### New York Giants

On October 12, 2024, Haack signed with the [New York Giants](/source/New_York_Giants).[38] The following day he made his 100th NFL appearance in his debut game for the Giants against the [Cincinnati Bengals](/source/Cincinnati_Bengals).[39] He was released on November 12.[40]

### Jacksonville Jaguars

On December 3, 2024, Haack signed with the [Jacksonville Jaguars](/source/Jacksonville_Jaguars) practice squad.[41] He was released by Jacksonville on December 10.[42]

### Denver Broncos

On March 19, 2025, Haack signed a one-year deal with the [Denver Broncos](/source/Denver_Broncos), reuniting with his former special teams coordinator on the [Dolphins](/source/Miami_Dolphins), [Darren Rizzi](/source/Darren_Rizzi).[43] He was released on May 9.[44]

### Arizona Cardinals (second stint)

On November 19, 2025, Haack signed with the Arizona Cardinals.[45] He replaced punter [Blake Gillikin](/source/Blake_Gillikin) and had 25 punts for a 51.3 yards per punt average.[46]
