# Matsalu Bay

**Matsalu Bay** (Estonian: *Matsalu laht*) is a [bay](/source/Bay_(geography)) in [Lääne County](/source/L%C3%A4%C3%A4ne_County), [Estonia](/source/Estonia); the bay is part of [Väinameri](/source/V%C3%A4inameri).[1]

The bay's area is 67 km2.[1]

The bay and its coast area is under protection ([Matsalu National Park](/source/Matsalu_National_Park)).[1]

The bay is one of the most important wetland bird areas in Europe, due to its prime position on the [East Atlantic Flyway](/source/East_Atlantic_Flyway). Large numbers of migratory birds use Matsalu as a [staging area](/source/Staging_area_(birds)).[2] Every spring over two million [waterfowl](/source/Waterfowl) pass Matsalu, of which around 1.6 million are [long-tailed ducks](/source/Long-tailed_duck).[3][4]
