# Matong State Forest

**Matong State Forest** is a native forest, located in the [South Western Slopes](/source/South_Western_Slopes) region of [New South Wales](/source/New_South_Wales), in eastern [Australia](/source/Australia). The 3,177-hectare (7,850-acre)[2] state forest is located approximately 6 km (3.7 mi) south of [Matong](/source/Matong), and 30 km (19 mi) south-east of [Narrandera](/source/Narrandera).[4]

The *Burning Seed Festival*, an annual regional [Burning Man](/source/Burning_Man) event, has been held at the state forest since 2011.[5][6]

## Etymology

The place name *Matong* is derived from a local [Aboriginal](/source/Aboriginal_Australians) word meaning 'strong' or 'great'.[7]

## Environment

### Flora

221 plant species have been recorded within the state forest, of which 135 were native, and 86 were introduced.[1] At least 94 percent of the forest within the state forest is dominated by [white cypress pine](/source/Callitris_glaucophylla).[3] Other large tree species present within the forest include [grey box](/source/Eucalyptus_microcarpa), [yellow box](/source/Eucalyptus_melliodora), [river red gum](/source/Eucalyptus_camaldulensis) and [bulloak](/source/Allocasuarina_luehmannii).[1]

Native plant species recorded within the state forest include [nardoo](/source/Marsilea_drummondii), [rock fern](/source/Cheilanthes_sieberi), [small vanilla lily](/source/Arthropodium_minus), [bulbine lily](/source/Bulbine_bulbosa), [early nancy](/source/Wurmbea_dioica), [dusky fingers](/source/Caladenia_fuscata), [common onion orchid](/source/Microtis_unifolia), [purple burr-daisy](/source/Calotis_cuneifolia), [climbing saltbush](/source/Chenopodium_nutans), [twining glycine](/source/Glycine_clandestina), [showy wattle](/source/Acacia_decora), [mallee wattle](/source/Acacia_montana), [hakea wattle](/source/Acacia_hakeoides), [wedge-leaf hop-bush](/source/Dodonaea_viscosa) and [creamy candles](/source/Stackhousia_monogyna).[1]

### Fauna

At least 10 species listed under the [*Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016*](/source/Biodiversity_Conservation_Act_2016_(NSW)) have been recorded within the state forest,[3] including [brown treecreeper](/source/Brown_treecreeper), [diamond firetail](/source/Diamond_firetail), [grey-crowned babbler](/source/Grey-crowned_babbler) and [spotted harrier](/source/Spotted_harrier).[3] Other birds recorded in the state forest include [rufous whistler](/source/Rufous_whistler) and [peaceful dove](/source/Peaceful_dove).[8]
