'''Matley''' is a semi-rural area in the [Tameside](/source/Tameside), [Greater Manchester](/source/Greater_Manchester), England. It was formerly a [civil parish](/source/civil_parish) in [Cheshire](/source/Cheshire) between 1866 and 1936, when the parish was abolished and the area divided between [Dukinfield](/source/Dukinfield), [Hyde](/source/Hyde%2C_Greater_Manchester), [Longdendale](/source/Longdendale_Urban_District) and [Stalybridge](/source/Stalybridge).

== History ==
Matley was historically a [township](/source/Township_(England)) in the [ancient parish](/source/ancient_parish) of [Mottram-in-Longdendale](/source/Mottram-in-Longdendale), which formed part of the [Macclesfield Hundred](/source/Macclesfield_Hundred) of Cheshire.<ref name=VoB>{{cite web |title=Matley Township / Civil Parish |url=https://visionofbritain.org.uk/unit/10098580 |website=A Vision of Britain through Time |publisher=GB Historical GIS / University of Portsmouth |access-date=15 February 2025}}</ref> From the 17th century onwards, parishes were gradually given various civil functions under the [poor laws](/source/poor_laws), in addition to their original ecclesiastical functions. In some cases, including Mottram-in-Longdendale, the civil functions were exercised by each township separately rather than the parish as a whole. In 1866, the legal definition of 'parish' was changed to be the areas used for administering the poor laws, and so Matley became a [civil parish](/source/civil_parish).<ref>{{cite book |last1=Youngs |first1=Frederic |title=Guide to the Local Administrative Units of England: Volume II, Northern England |date=1991 |publisher=Royal Historical Society |location=London |isbn=0861931270 |page=xv}}</ref>

When elected parish and district councils were created in 1894, Matley was included in the [Tintwistle Rural District](/source/Tintwistle_Rural_District).<ref name=VoB/> The parish was too small to qualify for a [parish council](/source/Parish_council_(England)), and so was given a [parish meeting](/source/parish_meeting) instead.<ref>{{cite news |title=Mottram Burial Board: A reconstitution |url=https://www.findmypast.co.uk/image-viewer?issue=BL%2F0004576%2F19080822&page=7 |access-date=15 February 2025 |work=Stalybridge Reporter |date=22 August 1908 |page=7}}</ref> In 1936, the parish was abolished and its area split four ways, with parts going to each of the three neighbouring [boroughs](/source/municipal_borough) of Stalybridge, Dukinfield and Hyde, and part going the new [Longdendale Urban District](/source/Longdendale_Urban_District).<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.ukbmd.org.uk/reg/districts/ashton%20under%20lyne.html|title=Ashton under Lyne Registration District|publisher=UKBMD|accessdate=6 November 2024}}</ref><ref>{{cite book |last1=Youngs |first1=Frederic |title=Guide to the Local Administrative Units of England |date=1991 |publisher=Royal Historical Society |location=London |isbn=0861931270 |page=26}}</ref> Most of the land area of the abolished parish was split roughly evenly between Dukinfield and Hyde, but most of the population lived in the smaller area around Roe Cross that was transferred to Stalybridge.<ref name=VoB/> At the 1931 census (the last before the abolition of the parish), Matley had a population of 348.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://visionofbritain.org.uk/unit/10098580/cube/TOT_POP|title=Population statistics Matley through time|publisher=[A Vision of Britain through Time](/source/A_Vision_of_Britain_through_Time)|accessdate=24 November 2025}}</ref>

Dukinfield, Hyde, Longdendale and Stalybridge all became part of the new borough of Tameside in Greater Manchester in 1974.<ref>{{cite legislation UK|type=act|act=Local Government Act 1972|year=1972|chapter=70|schedule=1|access-date=15 January 2025}}</ref>
