# Mathilde Wildauer

**Mathilde Wildauer** (7 February 1820 – 23 December 1878) was an Austrian actress, later an operatic soprano, taking leading roles at the [Theater am Kärntnertor](/source/Theater_am_K%C3%A4rntnertor) in Vienna.

## Life

Wildauer was born in [Vienna](/source/Vienna), daughter of Vinzenz Wildauer, a stockbroker, and his wife Clara. Her acting debut, after success in amateur theatre, was at the [Burgtheater](/source/Burgtheater) in 1834, as Susette in *Die Rosen des Herrn von Malesherbes* by [August von Kotzebue](/source/August_von_Kotzebue).[1]

She went on to appear in comedies by Kotzebue, [August Wilhelm Iffland](/source/August_Wilhelm_Iffland), [Roderich Benedix](/source/Roderich_Benedix) and [Eduard von Bauernfeld](/source/Eduard_von_Bauernfeld), and became well liked by the public. She was particularly successful as [Katherina](/source/Katherina_(Kate)_Minola) in Shakespeare's *[The Taming of the Shrew](/source/The_Taming_of_the_Shrew)*.[1][2]

As an operatic soprano she first appeared in 1845 at the [Theater in der Josefstadt](/source/Theater_in_der_Josefstadt), in operas including *[La fille du régiment](/source/La_fille_du_r%C3%A9giment)* by [Gaetano Donizetti](/source/Gaetano_Donizetti) as Marie. In 1846 she appeared at the [Theater an der Wien](/source/Theater_an_der_Wien), and in 1849 at the [Theater am Kärntnertor](/source/Theater_am_K%C3%A4rntnertor). During this period she continued in acting roles at the Burgtheater, where in 1848 she created the role of Nandl in the original production of the [Singspiel](/source/Singspiel) *Das Versprechen hinterm Herd* (The promise behind the hearth) by [Alexander Baumann](/source/Alexander_Baumann_(dramatist)); this was regarded as one of her greatest successes.[1][2]

### In opera

From 1851 she devoted her career to opera, and joined the company of the Theater am Kärntnertor. Roles included Susanna in [Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart](/source/Wolfgang_Amadeus_Mozart)'s *[The Marriage of Figaro](/source/The_Marriage_of_Figaro)*, and Zerlina in Mozart's *[Don Giovanni](/source/Don_Giovanni)*; the title roles in [Gaetano Donizetti](/source/Gaetano_Donizetti)'s operas *[Lucia di Lammermoor](/source/Lucia_di_Lammermoor)* and *[Linda di Chamounix](/source/Linda_di_Chamounix)*; the title role in *Die Zigeunerin* (*[The Bohemian Girl](/source/The_Bohemian_Girl)*) by [Michael William Balfe](/source/Michael_William_Balfe); and Katharina in *Der Nordstern* (*[L'étoile du nord](/source/L'%C3%A9toile_du_nord)*) by [Giacomo Meyerbeer](/source/Giacomo_Meyerbeer), who directed the Vienna production in 1855, insisting on Wildauer taking the role.[1][2]

She was also successful as a concert singer, but rarely appeared outside Vienna.[2] She retired after a final appearance in 1864, as Isabella in Meyerbeer's *Robert der Teufel* (*[Robert le diable](/source/Robert_le_diable)*).[1]

Wildauer died in 1878, and was buried at [Hietzing Cemetery](/source/Hietzing_Cemetery) in Vienna.[1]
