**Mathematical engineering** is an interdisciplinary academic and professional field that combines mathematics, [engineering](/source/Engineering), and [computational science](/source/Computational_science) to model, analyze, and solve real-world problems in engineering, industry, finance, and technology. Mathematical engineers use advanced mathematical methods to develop algorithms, simulations, and predictive models for complex systems.

Mathematical engineering is not as established as [mathematical physics](/source/Mathematical_physics), so researchers focus on sub-fields like [information theory](/source/Information_theory), [control theory](/source/Control_theory), [signal processing](/source/Signal_processing), [image processing](/source/Image_processing), [theory of computation](/source/Theory_of_computation), [systems theory](/source/Systems_theory).[1]
