# Matfield Shale

The **Matfield Shale** is a [geologic formation](/source/Formation_(geology)) in [Kansas](/source/Kansas) from the [Permian](/source/Permian) [period](/source/Period_(geology)).[1][2] The unit is recognizable in several road cuts in the [Flint Hills](/source/Flint_Hills), especially in the vicinity of the [Kansas River](/source/Kansas_River), by 4 or 5 beds of red/maroon shale.
